The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: May 12, 2012 Notes, Scores, & Images

Arvie Bringas is back to his old tricks for the FEU Tamaraws.

Speeding Bullets:
- Backstopped by recruits from the Lourdes School of Mandaluyong, La Salle Greenhills, and Collegio de San Agustin, the Junior Archers of Zobel blasted the hapless Pirates. And, yes, that IS the real score: 113-27. Curiously, star guard Renzo Subido was nowhere to be found, despite, to my knowledge at least, the fact that he’s still eligible to play. The guys to watch for this season seem to be Aleck Melecio (transferred from LSM), Justin Wieneke (from CSA), and Gian Abanilla (presumably the son of DLSU coach Gee Abanilla).
- By beating the winless JRU Light Bombers, the UPIS Junior Maroons won their third game in four outings. This time, it was Benz Nacpil and Freddy Pajarillaga who led the way, combining for 26 points, while Raymart Sablan continued to be a solid inside warrior, grabbing 12 boards. Look for the Junior Maroons to improve on last season’s futility.
- The NU Bulldogs continue to look mighty scary as they now tote an immaculate 7-0 record. With their tremendous frontline balanced by good outside shooting, it seems the guys of coach Eric Altamirano are primed for a deep run as the Filoil tourney nears the end of the
Eliminations. Mark De Guzman, Denice Villamor, and Cedrick Labing-isa torched the nets with 7 triples combined.
- JRU was a picture of strangeness as they let the Arellano Chiefs climb back from a sizeable deficit and steal the game. Rocky Acidre hit 4 treys on his way to 20 markers, while Ralph Salcedo and James Forrester combined for 33 points to help complete Arellano’s comeback. The Bombers led for the first three quarters before the Chiefs came alive in the final frame, outscoring JRU, 23-13. Nate Matute led the Bombers with 21 points, but he shot 0-for-6 from beyond the arc.
- FEU climbed to 3-1 in the standings after beating the Benilde Blazers. RR Garcia and Chris Tolomia proved to be too much for CSB’s backcourt. Garcia and Tolomia paired up for 5 triples on their way to 33 points as the Tams successfully kept the Blazers at bay. Anthony Hargrove was also solid for FEU, getting 13 points to go along with his 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. He should be the prime inside option for the Morayta quintet in the coming 75th season of the UAAP. Joel Tolentino and Jonathan Grey, meanwhile, led the Blazers with 16 and 14 points respectively.
