The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: May 18, 2012 Notes, Scores, & Images

UP's Mark Lopez (R) challenges the interior defense
of Letran's Raymond Almazan (L).

Speeding Bullets:
- Arwin Margallo and Shaquille Imperial engaged in a shootout, with each scoring 39 points as the Baby Falcons beat the Junior Altas. Margallo, however, had a lot of help as Adamson shot 61% from the field, while Perpetual was held to just 44%. Keanu Asistio was also solid at the slot for the Baby Falcons with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals.
- Raph Atangan and Hubert Cani led the NU Bullpups in roaring back from a slow start, upending the FEU-FERN Baby Tams in the process. Atangan, Cani, and center Rey Lapiz combined for 39 of the 59 markers of NU, which had only 4 assists for the match. The Baby Tams wasted a fast start and their edge on the boards as they were outscored 39-27 in the second half.
- The Golden Stags rolled to their third win at the expense of the Pirates. Once again, Ian Sangalang and Calvin Abueva were the spearheads for Baste, combining for 50 points, 30 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 rejections. Abueva also shot 3 triples. Despite their awesome production, however, Lyceum didn’t really go away. Floricel Guevarra and Vence Laude helped the Pirates stay in the fight till the waning moments. Guevarra and Laude paired up for 35 markers.

- FEU utilized a big second period to break the game open, and they’re dominant third quarter all but sealed the win over JRU. Terrence Romeo led all scorers with 17 points on the strength of 4 treys. He also grabbed 5 boards and dished out 3 assists. RR Garcia helped quarterback the Tams with 9 points and 7 dimes, while Mark Bringas and Carl Cruz were solid inside, combining for 16 points and 8 rebounds. Nat Lopez and Alex Almario were the only bright spots for the Bombers with 12 and 11 markers each. FEU outrebounded JRU, 55-27, and limited them to just 32% FG shooting.
- UP absorbed its fifth loss, losing to Letran thanks to the combined 36 points of Jam Cortes and Mark Cruz. In the absence of his two sons, Kevin and Jun-Jun, coach Louie Alas has relied on Cortes and Cruz for the Knights’ scoring, and they haven’t disappointed. Raymond Almazan also played well in his second game, scoring 7 points on top of his 17 rebounds. On the other end, Mike Silungan led the Maroons’ losing cause with 15 points. He just shot 5-of-14 from the floor, though. Coach Ricky Dandan’s big men, Rual Suyod and Alinko Mbah, struggled in this one, combining for just 5 points and 8 boards in 31 minutes.
