The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: June 6, 2012 Notes, Scores and Photos

Greg Slaughter returned to action and dominated in the paint
for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Notes:

- The Golden Stallions of Xavier School continue to shine, defeating the highly-touted Staglets of San Sebastian in their playoff tiff. RP-Youth mainstay Kyles Lao continued to be Xavier’s top gun, scoring 24 points on top of 8 rebounds and 3 assists. The Stallions’ other up-and-coming stars, Jarrell Lim and Isaac Go, also produced good numbers, combining for 30 points and 8 boards. Lim also shot in 2 triples while Go blocked 3 shots. Mike Calisaan and Ryan Costelo tried to rally the Staglets with 17 points each, but Xavier proved to be just a little steadier in the endgame. Xavier goes on to play against Letran in the Juniors semifinals.

- The Bullpups didn’t exactly start off the gates with guns ablazing, but they still managed to get past a spunky UPIS squad. NU got sweet revenge against a UPIS team that, technically, inflicted NU’s only elimination round loss. The Bullpups actually won their encounter, 62-52, but they fielded an ineligible player, which resulted in the win being awarded to UPIS. This eventually gave UPIS its ticket into a rematch with NU in the playoffs. Once again, Raph Atangan showed that he would be NU’s top dog in Season 75, netting a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Hubert Cani also did well, producing 9 points and 4 assists, while

Rey Lapiz ended up with 8 markers and 10 boards for NU. Benz Nacpil was the brightest spot for the Junior Maroons, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. NU battles the heavily-favored San Beda Red Cubs next.

- Ola Adeogun made sure the Red Lions remained unbeaten after 9 games, dominating the smaller CSB Blazers with 18 points and 3 blocks as San Beda barreled thru to the Seniors semifinals. It also didn’t help Benilde that Baser Amer produced a great all-around effort for the Bedans. The Davao native pumped in 13 points on the strength of 3 treys to go along with 6 dimes and 5 caroms as the Red-and-White advanced. So anemic was CSB’s shooting that they managed just 4 points in the first period, and eventually ended up making just 25% of all their field goals in the game. Carlso Lastimosa and Paolo Taha led the way for CSB with 12 and 11 points respectively. San Beda faces traditional rivals De La Salle in the Final Four.

- The NU Bulldogs uncharacteristically started slow, falling behind by 10 points at the end of the first quarter to the UST Growling Tigers, but they eventually found their bearings and held strong for a well-earned quarterfinal victory. Like San Beda, NU’s slated remained immaculate after 9 outings, thanks mainly to their own version of the Big Three – Emmanuel Mbe, Ray Parks and Mark De Guzman. Parks led everyone in scoring with 23 points, De Guzman continued to find his range with a dozen markers, while Mbe was the anchor in the middle, finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The Tigers fought bravely in this one, keeping in-step with the Bulldogs for the whole game. Aljohn Mariano, Jeric Fortuna, and Karim Abdul all wound up in double-digits, but it wasn’t enough as their field goal shooting gradually got worse as the game progressed. UST eventually made just 35% of their field goals, including just 15% of their attempts from beyond the arc. NU faces UAAP defending champion Ateneo in the Final Four.

- The Ateneans needed to buck another slow start, and needed a big finishing kick, to finally get rid of the FEU Tamaraws in the quarterfinals. Greg Slaughter returned to action after missing the Eagles’ game against DLSU last weekend, scoring 29 points on 11-of-16 FG shooting, while also grabbing 11 rebounds. Juami Tiongson helped him out with a dozen points and 2 treys. Kiefer Ravena continued to be inconsistent with his shot (just 2-of-11 from the floor), but he did get 9 boards and dish out 7 assists in a great display of his other less-hyped-up skills. Terrence Romeo and Anthony Hargrove led the way for FEU, scoring 13 and 12 respectively, but they missed the usual velvet touch of RR Garcia, who managed just 8 points on 2-of-13 FG shooting. Ateneo also had more rebounds (50-37) and more assists (17-10) than FEU. The Tamaraws now begin their final preparations for Season 75, while the Blue Eagles remain alive and will face unbeaten

NU in the Final Four.

- The Green Archers had to tough it out against a very physical Golden Stags quintet, but they still managed to win and gain entry into the Seniors semifinals. Jeron Teng continued to be the focal point of the Green-and-White offense, scoring 17 points on top of 11 rebounds and 3 assists. LA Revilla and Almond Vosotros helped him out with 17 and 15 points respectively. Norbert Torres was checked in this game, producing just 8 points, but he did grab 14 rebounds and he blocked 5 shots. Ian Sangalang and Calvin Abueva continuted to be their roles as San Sebastian’s dynamic duo, pairing up for 33 points and 16 rebounds, but they just didn’t have enough gas to keep up with the Archers in the final frame. Baste also got thoroughly beaten in terms of rebounds (51-42), assists (17-11), and field goal shooting (45%-36%). La Salle tries to continue its winning run against the undefeated Red Lions in the Final Four.
