The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: Championship Day Notes, Scores and Photos

Emmanuel Mbe and Ray Parks can't help but smile
after they won the 2012 Filoil Preseason Cup.

Notes:
- Reggie Morido finished with a double-double and Raph Atangan scpred 18 points as the NU Bullpups clinched 3rd place in the Juniors Division of the 2012 Filioli Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup. The Bullpups shot better from the field, had more rebounds, assists, and blocks as they rebounded from their semifinals defeat at the hands of San Beda. Morido was the star of the show here, scoring 22 points and grabbing 12 rebounds as NU finished on the podium at the expense of the only non-UAAP/NCAA team in the field, Xavier. The Golden Stallions accounted well for themselves, drawing another fine performance from their dynamic duo of Kyles Lao and Jarrell Radley Lim. Lao and Lim scored 24 and 12 points respectively to finish as the only Xavier players in double-figures. Gian Go anchored them on defense with 13 rebounds and 1 block to go along with 6 markers. NU now looks forward to defending the UAAP Juniors crown it won last year at the expense of the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws. On the other hand, Xavier hopes to bounce back in its chief tournament, the Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball League. After lording it over the field in recent memory, the Stallions failed to enter Finals earlier this year.

- San Beda had to rely on a strong fourth quarter to thwart the championship dreams of Rey Nambatac and the Letran Squires. Trailing most of the way, the Red Cubs outscored their rivals from Intramuros, 28-17, in the payoff period to steal the 2012 Filoil Juniors crown. The Red & White were led by their platoon of RP-Youth players, namely Arvin Tolentino, Ranbill Tongco, Rev Diputado, and Josh Caracut. That fearsome foursome finished with a combined 59  points to steal the game from Letran, which was led by the combined 45-point output of Nambatac and big man Bong Quinto. The Squires actually shot better than the Cubs in this game, but some costly lapses in the final frame enabled San Beda to roar back and eventually pull the rug from under the Letranistas. The Bedans made up for their anemic 38% FG shooting by outrebounding Letran, 45-42, and forcing the Squires to commit 18 turnovers, which they converted to 18 points-off-turnovers. San Beda now focuses its preparations on retaining the NCAA Juniors title it won last year even as Letran goes back to the drawing board to find a way to get back at their traditional rivals.
- The Ateneo Blue Eagles rebounded from two back-to-back defeats (against DLSU and NU respectively) to finish third in the Seniors Division of the 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup. Once again, coach Norman Black and the Katipunan quintet turned to big man Greg Slaughter, who finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds in leading Ateneo past the San Beda Red Lions. No other Blue Eagle got more than 10 points, with Justin Chua chipping in 8 points and Juami Tiongson and Kiefer Ravena each netting 7 markers. The Ateneans, however, defended really well, limiting the Bedans to just 34% FG shooting, and outrebounding them, 42-35. Jake Pascual, Ola Adeogun, and Baser Amer scored 15, 12, and 10 points respectively to lead the Red & White’s losing effort. Ateneo will now wind up its preparations in going for a rare fifth UAAP title in a row. Meanwhile, the Lions will go into the new NCAA season as favorites to win their sixth title in the last seven years.
- Ray Parks and the NU Bulldogs sent a powerful message to the rest of the local college basketball scene, winning the 2012 Filoil Seniors and ending the summer with an immaculate 11-0 card. Ray Parks was, once again, the hero of the day. The tournament MVP scattered 19 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out 2 assists, and stole the ball twice to lead NU over the gritty and much-improved Green Archers. Emmanuel Mbe, adjudged the Defensive Player of the Tournament, also did well, finishing with 13 points, 15 boards, and 2 rejections, while Gelo Alolino stepped up with 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. NU found the going tough early on, as La Salle piled on the pressure and tried to slow down the pace of the game. Parks, however, refused to let his team down, making big play after big play to help the Henry Sy-backed squad get the upperhand for good late in the fourth. The Bulldogs converted on 6 three-point tries, compared to just 3 for DLSU, while also outrebounding the Archers, 47-41. LA Revilla and Norbert Torres led the Geen & White with 14 and 13 markers respectively. Both teams are looking forward to a UAAP season that might finally see them returning to the Final Four. NU’s last time trip to the UAAP postseason was way back in 2001, while the Archers hope to make a comeback after failing to make it last year.

Based on what you've seen, do you think the Blue Eagles are the favorites to win it all this year? If not, who could possibly threaten them, and why?

Yes, I still think that, despite their inconsistency over the course of the preseason, the Eagles are still the best bet to win the UAAP title. Their combination of depth, coaching, and championship experience is yet to be matched, and it'll really take a strong showing from the other teams, especially NU, FEU, and DLSU, if Ateneo is to be unseated.

Do you think they'll be even bigger favorites this year compared to their previous championship runs? Even considering the rise of NU and La Salle as legitimate threats, the departure of two key starters in Long and Monfort, and no big name recruits to replace them, a la Kiefer Ravena and Greg Slaughter?

I'm a big fan of experience, and, because Ateneo has that in spades, I think the Eagles are still the favorites. Both NU and DLSU will be much stronger this season, but it'll really surprise me if either of them dominates the field. My top 4 are AdMU, DLSU, FEU, and NU -- that's in alphabetical order ;)
