UE's RR De Leon goes up strong on the break as the Filipinos debut with a win on Day 2. |
Notes:
The Indonesians and the Filipinos quickly raced to the top of the standings in the 2012 Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Under-18 Championship for Boys in Singapore.
The Indons frustrated the Malaysians in their first game of the tourney and then defeated the home team to shoot up to first place with a 2-0 slate. Andre Andriano led Indonesia in its win over Malaysia with 17 points and 7 rebounds, while Juan Kokodiputro took up the scoring cudgels against Singapore, finishing with 17 markers on top of 14 boards and 3 steals.
Team Pilipinas, meanwhile, mercilessly pounded the Laotians in Day 2 for its first win. LSGH Junior Blazer Mario Bonleon, CSJL Squire Rey Nambatac and UST Growling Tiger Kent Lao formed a terrific triumvirate, combining for 57 points to lead the Filipinos. RR De Leon of UE, J-Jay Alejandro, and Rash Rivero (both of NU) also scored in twin digits with 16, 12, and 12 respectively. The Pinoys limited the Laotians to just 16% FG shooting and outscored them from virtually every area of the floor.
It was the second loss of Laos in as many tries after they were defeated by the Singaporeans in Day 1. Remus Low, Jun Wei Tan, and Qing Huang Toh led the home squad in a blowout of Laos, 123-19, with 18, 16, and 16 points respectively. Cat-quick guard Junrong Thng also did well with 11 markers, 8 dimes, and 6 thefts. Singapore’s star player, Delvin Goh, seems as if he’s still holding back, averaging just 14 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Goh is a mainstay of the Singaporean NT and is seen as some sort of “phenom” in the local scene.
Curiously enough, both Thailand and Vietnam failed to send teams to the tournament. Considering how Thailand is a traditionally strong team in the region, and the gains Vietnam made in the Nha Trang meet last year, it's quite surprising both countries weren't represented.
