Team Pilipinas clinched the 2012 SEABA U18 title in the Singapore Basketball Centre after drubbing erstwhile unbeaten Indonesia, 81-57. J-Jay Alejandro and Rey Nambatac led the Pinoys anew, while Kyle Suarez scored a personal tournament-high of 13 points to help nail the championship.
The Filipinos led practically the whole game, though they were never really able to pull away from the Indonesians, who were led by Jan Panagan’s 13 points. Team Pilipinas did a swell job of limiting Indonesia’s offensive options, as gunners Juan KokoDiputro and Andre Andriano shot just 6-of-21 from the floor, while twin towers Vincent Kosasih and Kristianto Halim were held to a combined 5 points and 6 rebounds.
The Philippines clung to a slim 6-point spread at the end of two periods before buckling down to extend the lead to a dozen markers at the start of the final frame. The Pinoys dominated practically every category by game’s end, forcing the Indons to 18 turnovers on the strength of 12 steals, while also outrebounding them and outshooting them from the field.
Suarez, who missed most of his only season in the UAAP Juniors Division last year for the Ateneo Blue Eaglets, was the picture of efficiency here. The current UP Fighting Maroon hopeful scored 13 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and got 2 steals in only 17 minutes of action.
In the day’s main game, Singapore blew the game open in the third quarter to pull away and snare the third and final ticket to the FIBA-Asia U18 tourney later this year. The tandem of Junrong Thng and Delvin Goh continued to impress, with Thng scoring 15 points, getting 5 rebounds, and dishing out 3 assists, while Goh, clearly the best Singapore youngster in the field, had a double-double line of 20 points and 10 boards. Malaysia was hampered by awful shooting, as they converted just 32% of their field goals, 16% of their threes, and 38% of their charities. Nobody finished with more than 8 markers for Malaysia, which ended up fourth with a 1-3 slate.
The finals standings show the Philippines with an immaculate 4-0 card followed by the Indons’ 3-1 record, and the Singaporeans winning 2 of their 4 matches. Laos finished last, right behind Malaysia, with no wins to show after 4 games.
