Notes:
Team Pilipinas caught up with hosts Thailand atop the standings after getting its second win in as many games. Singapore, meanwhile, won its first game of the tourney by beating out Malaysia in the main game.
Marcus Douthit was the main man again for Coach Jong Uichico as the Philippines closed in on the lone SEABA slot to the 2012 FIBA-Asia Cup in Tokyo, Japan. Douthit finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block to pace the Pinoys, while Julius Faisal Ahmad and Christian “Dodo” Sitepu combined for 26 markers for the Indons.
Former Smart-Gilas swingman Mac Baracael also did well, scoring 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Dave Marcelo was likewise a big lift for Team Pilipinas with 11 points and 6 rebounds in just 16 minutes of play. Former collegiate teammates Chris Tiu and Emman Monfort manned the backcourt effectively, too.
Tiu finished with 13 points, 5 boards, and 2 steals, while Monfort dished out 7 dimes and had 3 steals. Next up for the Filipinos is Malaysia, who has practically bowed out of contention after absorbing its second defeat in three games. That loss was mainly because of Desmond Oh, who scored 18 points, handed out 4 assists, and had 2 thefts. Steven Khoo and Pathman Matialakan also provided strong support, pairing up for 27 points, 12 boards, and 5 assists. This is just the first win for the Singaporeans, who are set to face Indonesia in their last match.
Malaysia was plagued by more turnovers than Singapore, and by imbalanced playmaking as their opponents almost doubled up on their assists total for the game. The Malaysians also got outrebounded, 25-30, and got outplayed on the defensive end with Singapore having 6 more steals. Even if Malaysia beats the Pinoys tomorrow, they still won’t land the FIBA-Asia Cup berth.
