Notes:
Team Pilipinas put one foot in the FIBA-Asia Cup door by blasting Malaysia, 85-50, in the penultimate day of competitions in the 2012 SEABA Stankovic Cup Qualifying Tournament in Chiang Mai, Thailand. In contrast, the Pinoys’ final opponent, Thailand, didn’t seem too keen on playing their best as they were content to be blown out by Indonesia, 66-46.

Garvo Lanete poured in 14 points as Marcus Douthit finished with a double-double (11 points & 10 rebounds) to lead the Philippines past a visibly overmatched Malaysian squad missing some of its best players. Chris Tiu also frolicked as a playmaker, dishing out 9 assists, while former Smart-Gilas teammate Mac Baracael scored 9 points as the team’s main scoring option at forward. This loss sends Malaysia crashing to the bottom of the standings at 1-3. They are still, however, considered strong contenders for next year’s SEABA meet as main guns Guga Batumalai, John Ng, and Lee Wei Chee.

In the second game, Arki Wisnu, Julius Faisal Ahmad, and Galank Gunawan all scored in twin digits to lead Indonesia to its first win in three tries. The Indons and Thais played a close game for the first 20 minutes before the visitors poured in 23 points while limiting the hosts to just 7 in the third period. Wisnu was the game’s top scorer with 24 points, while Ahmad had 14 and Gunawan finished with 11. Indonesia dominated practically every category, especially rebounding, where they had a 46-28 advantage. This was due mainly to Gunawan and Dodo Sitepu combining for 24 boards. This turned out to be a no-bearing loss for Thailanf, though, since Indonesia’s best possible final record is 2-2 (if they beat the Singaporeans next).

In the final day of the tourney, the Pinoys and the Thais will dispute the only SEABA slot in the 2012 FIBA-Asia Cup, while Singapore and Indonesia will battle it out for third place.
