The 2012 SEABA Stankovic Qualifying Cup opened in Chiang Mai, Thailand last July 3, 2012. |
Notes:
Thailand raced to a 2-0 start in the 2012 Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Stankovic Qualifying Cup in Chiang Mai, Thailand after defeating Singapore and Malaysia on Days 1 & 2.
Joining the Thais near the top are the Filipinos, who drew a bye on Day 1, but were able to get win number one at the expense of the Singaporeans. Marcus Douthit led the way with 21 points and 7 rebounds, while Chris Tiu scored 18 markers and dished out 5 assists. PBA reinforcements LA Tenorio, Sonny Thoss, and Mac Baracael gave good accounts of themselves by combining for 27 points.
The loss to the Philippines buried Singapore at the very bottom of the standings with a 0-2 record. They lost to the hosts on Day 1, 67-62, thanks to the well-balanced offense of the Thais. Singapore actually played well enough to upset Thailand, but subpar 62.1% shooting from the line (18-of-29) hampered their effort.
After beating the Singaporeans on opening day, the home team went on to escape another close one, this time against the Malaysians. Bannered by Yoong Jing Kwaan’s near double-double, Malaysia dumped Indonesia in their first game only to lose by the slimmest of margins against Thailand. Malaysia actually held the lead in the first half before the Thais unleashed a big third quarter to snatch the advantage. It was close till the end, but Zhi Shin Chin he failed to tie the game after splitting his charities with 4 seconds to go, sealing Malaysia’s fate.
