Growing Their Wings: Bullpups Sink Eaglets to .500

Thirdy Ravena had a monster game, but the Eaglets
continued to struggle in the UAAP Juniors Divison.

NU BULLPUPS over AHS BLUE EAGLETS, 72-70

Thirdy Ravena had a monster game, but the Ateneo de Manila High School Blue Eaglets still fell short as the NU Bullpups rebounded from their loss to the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws by pulling the rug form under the Loyola five.

Moments after Anton Asistio hit an off-balance three that capped off Ateneo’s 17-7 rally spanning five minutes to tie the game at 70 with about 11 seconds left, NU’s super forward, Raph Atangan, weaved through the Eaglets’ interior defense to sink the winning lay-up. Atangan caught the ball at the near corner, drove by Gabe Capacio along the baseline and eluded Jme Escaler with a sidestep as the Bullpups remained at number two in the standings.

In the meantime, the Eaglets suffered their fourth loss in eight games. They are now at .500, and are in danger of not making the Final Four should they lose 2 or 3 more games. If our worst fears are realized, then this will be the first season the Ateneo Juniors squad won’t make the UAAP Final Four in… maybe ever.

The Blues actually controlled majority of the game, thanks to the brilliant play of Ravena, Asistio, sophomore Mike Nieto, junior Aaron Black, and senior Mark Gamboa. They were able to contain the Bullpups’ offense most of the way until Lorenzo Battad’s drive early in the fourth quarter gave Coach Jeff Napa’s canines only their second taste of the lead. By that time, the momentum had swung, and NU eventually led by as many as 10 points, 63-53, before the Ateneans’ last-ditch effort.

Coach Joe Silva was understandably frustrated at his boys, who have seemed to cave at the most critical junctures of close games so far this season.

Nobody doubts the depth and talent of this Blue Eaglets team, but they really have to dig deep and find the will to rally in their last six games if they still want a shot at regaining the UAAP Juniors crown.

One BIG Fight!

Anton Asistio tied the game by hitting this off-balance
trey with 11 ticks to go.

Raph Atangan (L) frustrated the Ateneo bigs, including
junior standout Jme Escaler (R).

Big brothers Gwynne Capacio and Kiefer Ravena
were on hand to cheer on their respective siblings.
