POWER RANKINGS:
These rankings are based on each team's Cumulative Efficiency Ratings
(CER - sum of all its players' efficiency ratings as calculated by PBA-Online.net) AND its
wins. The formula I used was this:
Team EFF = CER + (# of wins x 70)
I gave each win a value of 70 stat points simply because the average
score for each of the college teams in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason
Premier Cup (based on Statsboard.com) was 72.45ppg. I just rounded that down to
an even 70.
Despite the limitations of the statistical basis, I believe that these
rankings still generally reflect a balance of "how good each team has
been" and "how good each team is projected to be."
I’m 110% sure not everyone will agree with the following rankings, but
that was never the point anyway. As long as this fosters discussion and gives
fodder for tabletop discourse, then all’s good. Well, hopefully.
Let's go. Time for the
disagreeing to begin.
Rodney Brondial's Falcons sink, while Emmanuel Mbe's Bulldogs rise in our Power Rankings. |
1) FEU Tamaraws
(7-wins, 2-losses, 740.5 Team EFF)
The mantle of invincibility has all but dissipated in
Morayta, but this is still a formidable basketball team. Terrence Romeo’s
questionable decision-making against NU notwithstanding, coach Nash Racela
still has, arguably, the best backcourt duo in all of local amateur hoops.
2) NU Bulldogs
(6-wins, 3-losses, 670.4 Team EFF)
With Ray Parks and Emmanuel Mbe continuing to put up first-team-worthy
stat-lines, coach Eric Altamirano’s job shouldn’t be all too difficult. Dealing
FEU its first loss of the season and brutally messing up Adamson have cemented
the Bulldogs’ status as title contenders anew.
Ray Parks and the Bulldogs gave FEU its first taste of defeat this season. |
3) DLSU Green Archers
(5-wins, 4-losses, 582.1 EFF)
The Greenies may have ended the first round with a whimper,
but they sure as hell have begun the second round with a bang. Getting by the
Soaring Falcons and riding high against the Tamaraws have bolstered the Green
Archers’ stock considerably. Also, coach Juno Sauler has four guys whose EFF
ratings are hovering at or around the 30 EFF mark, which is definitely a good
thing. They should nail win #6 against lowly UP this week.
4) UE Red Warriors (5-wins,
3-losses, 573.2 EFF)
Roi Sumang has been nothing short of awesome in the clutch
this season. Just ask UST. And did you see coach Boysie Zamar celebrate as if
he already won the big kahuna? It’s far from over, of course, but things aren’t
looking too shabby for the Recto Reds. Not too shabby at all. Of course, the
big question is can this Sumang-Mammie show carry them all the way to the Final
Four?
5) Ateneo Blue Eagles
(4-wins, 4-losses, 516.9 Team EFF)
Coach Bo Perasol will want to forget that game against UP,
even if it did end up in the win column. It was not the start he wanted for a
team hell-bent on making a big splash in round two, but things could’ve been
much worse. At least, Kiefer Ravena seemed to be in good shape already. The
Eagles will be tested by UST and Adamson this week, and their performance might
make or break their Anim-o campaign.
6) UST Growling Tigers
(4-wins, 4-losses, 497.1 Team EFF)
Boy do these guys miss Jeric Teng. And, what? Did Aljon
Mariano just injure his ankle, too? Seems like coach Pido pissed off Lady Luck
big time, and things won’t be easy with Ateneo and NU waiting this week. With
every foe locked on limiting Karim Abdul and Kevin Ferrer, everybody else has
to step up big time.
7) Adamson Soaring
Falcons (3-wins, 6-losses, 432.2 EFF)
That terrible showing against NU really hurt Adamson, and
now they’ve really fallen behind even the middle of the pack. Coach Leo Austria
will have to wield some serious magic if he still wants a shot at the Final
Four, and they can start by trying to upset the Eagles this coming weekend.
8) UP Fighting Maroons
(0-wins, 8-losses, 245.5 Team EFF)
The Maroons’ first half against Ateneo might already be the
highlight of their season, which isn’t saying much. Either that or the fact that
they changed their head coach midseason for the second time in recent memory. Oh,
to hell with this program. Why even bother?

Correction, Mr. Flojo. DLSU coach is Juno Sauler and no longer Gee Abanilla.
