With each team now having played at least three
games, the time is right for us to, once again, look at the top playmakers in
Asia’s best play-for-pay league. What makes this a little different than
previous posts is that the stats will be culled from only the Commissioner’s
Cup and not for the entire season.
Without further ado, here they are – the top five
point guards in the 2013-2014 PBA Commissioner’s Cup as of the morning of March
25, 2014 (as always, this is based on the Player Efficiency ratings as
calculated by PBA-Online.net):

Some new names have popped up among the league's best PGs! (composite image by Enzo Flojo/Hoop Nut) |
5. Chris
Ross (SMB) - 8.3ppg, 3.3rpg, 7.3apg, 2.8spg, 27.4 EFF
- Don’t be fooled by Ross’s 22-point explosion against
ROS last March 19. That probably won’t happen for a very long time, but that’s
not to say this guy is no threat. On the contrary, Ross can hurt opposing teams
in so many ways, as characterized by his currently leading the league in
assists and steals.

After years of playing second fiddle, it looks like Chris Ross has finally stepped into the spotlight. |
4. Jimmy
Alapag (TNT) - 9.0ppg, 2.5rpg, 6.0apg, 1.3 triples per game, .409 3pt%, 27.4
EFF
- Though the Mighty Mouse has deferred of late in
terms of scoring, he is still one of the premier guards in the PBA mainly
because of his playmaking and composure. Proof? He is running #4 in the league
in terms of assists. In addition, he is also hitting an impressive 41% from
beyond the arc.
3. Paul Lee
(ROS) - 12.8ppg, 4.0rpg, 3.3apg, 1.0spg, 2.0 triples per game, .421 3pt%, .875
FT%, 28.3 EFF
- Lee is one of only two PGs in the top ten local
scorers this conference, but that’s not the only thing he can do. Over the
course of four games, Lee has been able to showcase his rebounding, playmaking,
and defense. He’s not the best PG out there yet, but he’s creeping up on the
leaders for sure. Now if only the Painters can get wins…
2. LA
Tenorio (GIN) - 9.6ppg, 5.4rpg, 6.2apg, 1.0 triple per game, 28.7 EFF
- Despite the losses piling up for the Gin Kings,
Tenorio has been quite steady, doing more things a guy his size should at this
level of the game. Yes, he still has some spotty decision-making here and
there, but, by and large, the Lieutenant is back among the league’s elite floor
generals. He’ll need to improve his shooting, though, because he’s hit just 5
of 21 from long distance.

LA Tenorio remains as tenacious as ever despite Ginebra's obvious struggles. |
1. Jayson
Castro (TNT) - 15.7ppg, 3.5rpg, 4.2apg, 1.0spg, 1.3 triples per game, .381
3pt%, 32.5 EFF
- Castro is #3 in scoring among all locals and #6 in
assists. What does that mean? He is easily the most dangerous guard out there.
Oh, and he also hits more than 1 trey an outing. Gone are the days opposing
defenders can sag off of the Blur and force him to take the long tom. These
days, he won’t hesitate to spot up, and, frankly speaking, he’ll have a fair
chance of making it. Best PG in the PBA right now? You betcha.

Jayson Castro continues to be the undisputed #1 point guard in the country. |
