The 2014 Filoil
Flying V Preseason Premier Cup opened a couple of days ago with a pair of
Juniors division games and three Women’s division games. The biggest winners
from opening day were the UST Tiger Cubs and the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws.

In the day’s opener,
UST Tiger Cubs leaned on stronger rebounding and five guys scoring in
double-figures to get their first win and deal their UAAP rivals, the UPIS
Junior Maroons, their first loss of the summer, 91-86. Nicole Luna was the star
here for the Cubs, dropping 19 points on top of 7 rebounds, and 2 steals off
the bench. Vince Ferrer, younger brother of UST Growling Tiger Kevin, also
impressed with 13 points on 4/7 FG shooting, including 2 triples. UST
outrebounded UPIS, 50-44, with Nicole, Vince, and Nicole’s brother Jouel Luna
each grabbing 7 or more boards. Enzo Barraquias led UPIS with 27 points and 9
boards.

The second
game saw the UST Tigresses beat the CEU Lady Scorpions, 73-57. Kristine Siapoc
hit 8 triples on her way to a game-high 27 points. Jhenn Angeles backer her up
with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. On the other end, Apet Pontejos
scored 16 markers to lead CEU, while Shaddy Ogunsemuyen and Marjorie Mercado
paired up for 23 points and 29 rebounds in a losing cause.

In the third
game, the Adamson Lady Falcons defeated the RTU Lady Thunders behind the 17
points of Jinkie Balista. Balista went ballistic, hitting 5 triples in the
game, while also hauling down 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist. She was
backstopped by Josephine Ong and Jesusa Avila, who combined to score 22
markers. On the other end, Wiz Duazo and Rica Francisco scored 16 and 11 points
respectively to lead RTU in their preseason debut.

In game #4, the
UP Lady Maroons scraped by the CSB Lady Blazers, 56-54. Maan Wong and Bea Daez
led UP with 15 and 13 markers respectively. Wong and Daez paired up to shoot
8/14 form the 2-point area, with Daez also hitting 2 treys. UP also dominated
on the boards, 45-31, as Wong, Tin Alliermo, Janina Tatel, and Isay Aurellado
each grabbed 8 or more rebounds. Tin Madrid led CSB with 16 markers.

The final
match of the day resulted in the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws overcoming the
Malayan-Mapua Red Robins, 64-59. Brandrey Biernes did well with 5/9 FG shooting
to finish with 18 points, while Chris Fajarito tallied a splendid double-double
line of 17 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 steal. FEU-FERN led
most of the way in this one and offset the fact they had 22 turnovers by
outrebounding Mapua, 47-35, and outshooting the Red Robins, 44% to 34%. Dainiel
Aguirre did well for Mapua, dropping 23 markers, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals.
