Action in the
2014 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup heated up yesterday as the men’s
teams took to the hardwood. At the end of the day, FEU, San Sebastian, San
Beda, and De La Salle all came away with debut wins.

Roundup:
In the day’s opener,
the San Sebastian Golden Stags leaned on their frontline to fashion out an
81-78 win over the UP Fighting Maroons. Rhanzel Yong led the Stags here,
shooting 7/13 from the floor to finish with 16 points in just 18 minutes of
action. He was backstopped by Jaymark Perez, who recorded an all-around
stat-line – 14 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Fil-Aussie Bradwyn
Guinto also impressed, recording 11 markers, 4 boards, and 2 blocked shots. It
was a tight game all throughout, but the Stags held sway mainly because they
clobbered the Maroons on the glass, 59-39, and had 22 second-chance points to
just 2 for UP. Former San Beda Red Lion Dave Moralde led UP with 18 points, 6
rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists, while the backcourt trio of Henry Asilum,
Kyles Lao, and the returning Mikee Reyes combined for 42 markers.

The second
game saw the FEU Tamaraws giving a beatdown to the Mapua Cardinals, 89-77,
behind the 19 points of Mike Tolomia. The younger brother of former pro Chester
Tolomia also handed out 4 assists and hauled down 3 rebounds in just 18 minutes
of play. He got ample support from national team cadet player Mark Belo, Raymar
Jose, and Alejandro Iñigo, who scored 13, 12 , and 11 points respectively. Things
started tight in the first quarter, but the Tams opened it up in the second
quarter and just cruised to their first win. They survived the 28-point
outburst of Josan Nimes, who drilled three triples. Russel Escoto also returned
to action for FEU, playing 14 minutes, scoring 3 points, and grabbing 3
rebounds.
Mike Tolomia is expected to be FEU's main man this season. |
Mac Belo's national team experience should help him big time in Season 77. |
In the third
game, the San Beda Red Lions had to battle NCAA rivals Letron through two
overtimes to notch their first victory of the summer, 99-96. The Knights
actually had the upper hand for most of the game until the Lions mounted a big
rally in the fourth period to force extra sessions. Baser Amer came away as the
game’s best player, hitting 3 treys on his way to 28 points, 7 rebounds, 3
assists, and 2 steals. Former Ateneo Blue Eagle Arthur Dela Cruz also did well,
contributing a double-double – 21 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
Big man Ola Adeogum was also dominant with 13 markers and 12 boards. On the
other end, pint-sized Mark Cruz led four Knights in double-figures with 18
points on 7/14 FG shooting. Ford Ruaya, Rey Nambatac, and Jamil Gabawan all
combined for 34 markers in Letran’s losing effort.

The final
match of the day resulted in the reigning UAAP Champion De La Salle Green
Archers subduing a game UE Red Warriors side, 69-62. DLSU trailed by four
entering the payoff period, but they flipped the switch and rallied to beat the
Recto Reds, who are now coached by Derrick Pumaren. Pumaren had coaching
tenures in the PBL, PBA, and with DLSU, too. He is the second Pumaren to coach
the Warriors (younger brother Dindo helmed UE from Season 68 to 71). Big man
Arnold Van Opstal, who looked like he bulked up in the offseason, led all
scorers with 16 points on 6/9 FG shooting. AVO also tallied 6 rebounds, 2
assists, and 1 block. He was ably supported by backcourt partners Thomas Torres
and Almond Vosotros, who scored 12 and 10 markers respectively. One interesting
sighting was the comebacking Yutien Andrada. Andrada tore his ACL in the summer
of 2013, but he looked energetic and very active in yesterday’s affair, scoring
4 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Roi Sumang and Moustapha Arafat led UE’s
fightback in this game, pairing up for a total of 27 points, but their efforts
weren’t enough to thwart the Archers’ fourth quarter storm. DLSU limited UE to
just 9 points in the payoff period while scoring 20 of their own.
Roi Sumang is expected to be UE's #1 gun anew this season. |
Terence Mustre, son of former PBAer Mike Mustre, returns to Manila and dons the Green & White. |
