#PBA2015 Govs Cup Roundup: May 27, 2015

Action from the 2015 PBA Governors’ Cup heated up anew as San Miguel dealt Barako Bull its first taste of defeat, while Alaska zoomed to the top after subduing the Star Hotshots. Recaps, box scores, and highlights here!

SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN over BARAKO BULL ENERGY, 116-113

The San Miguel Beermen notched their fourth straight win after dealing erstwhile undefeated Barako Bull its first loss of the conference, 116-113, in PBA Governors’ Cup action Wednesday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

AZ Reid and June Mar Fajardo each scored 22 points, while Ronald Tubid produced quality minutes off the bench and scored 13 to help the Beermen improve to 4-2.


San Miguel was still up by six, 107-101, with 3:43 remaining behind Tubid, who waxed hot with 12 points in the final frame. Joseph Yeo and Liam McMorrow, however, conspired in a quick 6-0 run to tied the game at 107-all. After a McMorrow split from the line, Lassiter and JC Intal exchanged triples as Barako Bull regained the lead, 111-110. Reid then made a jumper to put the Beermen back on top, 112-111, with 32 seconds left. Yeo missed a shot on the other end, forcing Barako Bull to foul with just six ticks left.

Marcio Lassiter also made 18 points for the Beermen.

McMorrow had 31 points for Barako Bull, now 4-1, which dropped its first game since winning four in a row to start the tournament.

ALASKA ACES over PUREFOODS STAR HOTSHOTS, 92-86

Alaska  leaned on its bench for the defensive stops and the big buckets to down Star, 92-86, in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday.

The win gave the Aces a 4-1 card and a share of the lead alongside Barako Bull, which lost to San Miguel Beer earlier in the night.

Forcing the Hotshots to fall into a maze of errors, Alaska broke away from the close contest early in the final period and posted an 83-72 lead.

Star tried to mount a last ditch rally but could only come to within five twice, the last time at 83-88.

Romeo Travis had 27 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 assists to pace the Aces, who got 40 points from their bench to the Hotshots’ 22. Vic Manuel added 10 markers for Alaska.

Star, which dropped to the cellar at 1-4 in the company of Blackwater and NLEX, had 21 turnovers. Marqus Blakely had three fouls in the first quarter and finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
