GLOBALPORT BATANG PIER over ALASKA ACES, 117-104 (OT)

The GlobalPort Batang Pier, behind huge performances from import Jarrid Famous and Stanley Pringle, clinched the No. 4 seed as well as the twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals after getting past top seed Alaska, 117-104, in an overtime duel on Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Alaska led by double-digits in the first half but opted not to field import Romeo Travis in the second half. Despite that, they gave GlobalPort a huge scare in the fourth quarter, coming back from 10 points down to force overtime.
With most of the Aces’ key players sitting out the extra period, however, GlobalPort dominated in overtime, 19-6.
Famous finished with 34 points and 26 rebounds, while Pringle had 24 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists. Asian import Omar Krayem also added 20 points, including four triples.
Terrence Romeo, the leading local scorer in the conference, contributed 14 markers. He could only score a mere four points in regulation, though, and many of his points in overtime came after the Batang Pier had taken a sizeable lead.
GlobalPort moved out of reach from its pursuers in the standings, ending the Governors’ Cup elimination round with a 7-4 record, good for fourth place. The Batang Pier ended the conference with three consecutive victories to secure the favorable seeding and the franchise’s best-ever finish in an elimination round.
Alaska had already clinched the top seed with its victory over San Miguel last Saturday. The Aces finished with an 8-3 record.
Cyrus Baguio scored 20 points to lead the Aces, who also got 13 markers from Travis and 10 each from Chris Banchero and Eric Menk.

PUREFOODS STAR HOTSHOTS over BLACKWATER ELITE, 87-82

The Star Hotshots eked out a tough victory over expansion team Blackwater, 87-82, to close their PBA Governors’ Cup elimination round schedule in fifth place on Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Marqus Blakely did a little of everything once again, stuffing the stat sheet with 22 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, 7 steals, and 4 blocks.
But he had plenty of help in this one with five locals finishing in double-figures for the team. Alex Mallari and Joe Devance each scored 12, PJ Simon added 11, while James Yap and Mark Barroca each chipped in with 10.
Star finished with a 6-5 record. They had a shot at earning a twice-to-beat advantage heading into today, but GlobalPort’s victory over Alaska in the opening game closed the door on that possibility.
The Hotshots fell behind by as many as 11 points in the second quarter but had a huge turnaround in the second half. They outscored the Elite, 28-18, in the third quarter before opening the fourth on a 14-5 run to lead, 81-69.
Blackwater tried to give Star a scare in the endgame, coming back to within four points, but that was as close as they could get.
The Elite finished their Governors’ Cup schedule with a 1-10 record, putting a close to their maiden season in the PBA. They were led by Marcus Cousin’s 21 points and 13 boards, while Bam Gamalinda added a dozen markers off the pine.
