#JonesCup2015 Roundup: Day Nine

The 2015 Jones Cup ended yesterday with Gilas Pilipinas and Taiwan Blue completing the top three. The Pinoys beat Taiwan White, and Taiwan Blue beat Korea to book their podium finishes. In other games, Russia also upended Japan, while Team USA dropped a tight one to the Kiwis.

GILAS PILIPINAS over TAIWAN WHITE, 96-67

Gilas Pilipinas clinched their first silver medal in the Jones Cup with a 29-point blowout of Taiwan’s Team B. Gary David exploded for 22 points, hitting 2 triples and getting 3 steals to lead the Filipinos, who also drew 15 points from Jayson Castro and a dozen markers from Mo Tautuaa. On the other end, Chien Wei-Ju had 18 points to pace the hosts, while Hsiao Shun-Yi dropped 14 markers.

RUSSIA over JAPAN, 76-63

Japan looked ready to send Russia crashing in the first half, but the Spartak Vladivostok selection rallied in the second half to break the game open and win. Andrey Ivanon tallied 19 points and 4 triples to lead Russia, while Aleksandr Gudumak and Kosntanyn Glazyrin had 13 and 12 markers respectively. Takatoshi Furukawa had 18 markers to pace Japan, while Ryumo Ono added 11.


NEW ZEALAND over USA, 91-89 (OT)

In this see-saw affair that went into an extra period, the Kiwis finally reigned supreme. Three New Zealand players scored 21 or more points, led by Brook Ruscoe, who dropped 24. Ray Turner had 22 points, while Jordan Mills scored 21. As for Team USA, Cory Bradford hit 3 triples en route to 23 points, while Calvin Warner and Jameel Watkins combined to put up 36 markers.


TAIWAN BLUE over KOREA, 80-73

Lee Jung-Hyun caught fire, scoring 31 points for the Koreans, but even that wasn’t enough as Taiwan Blue were able to rise to the challenge and win. Quincy Davis had 13 points and 15 rebounds to lead the hosts, while Tsai Wen-Cheng and Tseng Wen-Ting scored 12 and 11 points respectively. Taiwan outworked their foes on the boards, 46-29. This win gave Taiwan Blue third place in the tournament behind champion Iran and second-placer Gilas Pilipinas.
