#PBA2016 Philippine Cup Roundup: December 9-11, 2015

The 2015-2016 PBA Philippine Cup had another exciting last few days as the race for the outright semifinals berths and twice-to-beat advantages in the next round tightened up. Rain or Shine upended Alaska for a share of second spot, while the Beermen cemented their hold on #1 with an OT win over NLEX. GlobalPort continued its winning ways at the expense of Meralco, while Blackwater turned a lot of heads in their upset of Barako Bull.

GLOBALPORT BATANG PIER over MERALCO BOLTS, 108-104
Box Scores. 

The GlobalPort Batang Pier needed to weather a huge second half comeback from the Meralco Bolts but still came away with a 108-104 for a third consecutive win in the SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Terrence Romeo exploded for 33 big points while Stanley Pringle posted an all-around line of 19 points, six rebounds and six assists for GlobalPort, which improved to 6-3, just half a game behind third place Rain or Shine (6-2).

Jay Washington came up big off the bench, contributing 15 points and nine rebounds.

Jimmy Alapag came off the bench to lead Meralco’s charge with 18 points on the strength of 4 triples, while Cliff Hodge added 17 markers and 10 boards.

SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN over NLEX ROAD WARRIORS, 88-80 (OT)

The San Miguel Beermen, despite not having June Mar Fajardo in the extra period, had more than enough to notch an 88-80 overtime victory over the NLEX Road Warriors on Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome.

It was the sixth consecutive win for San Miguel in the SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup, moving right back on top of the standings with an 8-1 record.

Yancy De Ocampo, who had 17 points and 12 rebounds off the bench, more than made up for a subpar performance from Fajardo.

The back-to-back PBA MVP, who was matched up against NLEX’s veteran center Asi Taulava for most of the game, struggled for just nine points and nine rebounds while also tallying six turnovers and six fouls in over 26 minutes of play.

Alex Cabagnot also had 17 markers while Ronald Tubid added 14 for San Miguel.

Taulava and Jonas Villanueva each had 20 points to lead NLEX.

BLACKWATER ELITE over BARAKO BULL ENERGY, 116-92

Blackwater’s Carlo Lastimosa exploded for a career-best performance against his former team Barako Bull on Friday, leading the Elite to a comfortable 116-92 victory over the Energy in the SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Lastimosa, who traded by Barako Bull in the off-season, was just unstoppable as he posted a career-high 38 points on 14-for-20 (70%) shooting from the field, including 5-for-8 (62%) from three-point range.

He scored 17 of those in the fourth quarter as he helped stomp out a Barako Bull comeback.

Rookie Art Dela Cruz also came up big for the Elite, scoring 21 points on 9-for-13 (69%) shooting and grabbing six rebounds. Bam Gamalinda chipped in with a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards for Blackwater, which for only the second time this conference.

The Elite, now at 2-7, moved up into a tie with the Mahindra Enforcers for 10th place while Barako Bull dropped to 4-5.

Willy Wilson had another strong performance for Barako Bull, leading the way with 23 points. Urbiztondo finished with 17 points – 14 of those in the fourth quarter.

RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO-PAINTERS over ALASKA ACES, 111-105

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters notched a crucial victory, defeating the Alaska Aces, 111-105, to tie their victims for the coveted No. 2 spot in the SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup standings on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Rain or Shine snapped a four-game winning streak for Alaska and forced a deadlock between the two teams at 7-2, behind top-ranked San Miguel (8-1). The top two teams after the elimination round advance to the semifinals while No. 3 will need to go through the quarterfinal round.

Beau Belga led seven Elasto Painters in double-digit scoring, posting team-highs of 17 points and eight rebounds against the Aces.

Jericho Cruz and Raymund Almazan both scored 13, Jeff Chan, JR Quinahan and Don Trollano all had 12 apiece while Gabe Norwood came along late, scoring eight in the fourth quarter to finish with 11 markers.

Alaska’s Vic Manuel had 24 points and nine boards to lead his side.
