The Alaska Aces became one of two teams to officially book quarterfinal spots in the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup after they beat the Star Hotshots in Davao. The result also meant current league leader Meralco received a quarterfinal berth while also pegging the magic win total at 6 to be able to make it to the top eight.

The Alaska Aces strengthened their hold on third place in the Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup standings after hacking out a 100-92 win over the Star Hotshots on Saturday at the University of Southeastern Philippines Gym in Davao City.

Calvin Abueva scored 21 points, 12 of those in the crucial fourth quarter, while Chris Banchero added 15 markers to lead Alaska in the win.

Sonny Thoss added 13 points, Cyrus Baguio had 11, and import Shane Edwards chipped in with 10.

With the victory, Alaska moved up to 6-3, trailing only Meralco (6-2) and San Miguel (5-2) in the standings. They also avoided a loss that could have dropped down to a five-way tie as the playoff race entered its final stretch.

Star import Ricardo Ratliffe had 34 points and 20 rebounds, but that was far from enough in this one as the Hotshots stumbled down to 4-6.
