Meralco remained on top of the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup team standings after surviving Alaska this past Friday even as eliminated team GlobalPort ended their conference with a win over Phoenix.

The GlobalPort Batang Pier, already eliminated from the Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup, played spoilers against Phoenix as they ended the playoff hopes of the Fuel Masters in a 125-118 win on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
GlobalPort import Shawn Taggart scored 45 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in his final game, while Terrence Romeo exploded for 40 as the Batang Pier closed out its campaign with a 3-8 record.
They also eliminated Phoenix, which needed to win the game to remain in contention for the final spot in the quarterfinal round.
RR Garcia finished with 21 points – scoring 12 of those in the fourth quarter – to lead Phoenix. Veteran center Mick Pennisi added 17.
Import Kevin Pinkney finished with just 11 points and seven rebounds for the Fuel Masters.

The Meralco Bolts kept their hold on the No. 1 spot in the Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup standings after surviving a tough challenge from Calvin Abueva and the Alaska Aces, 107-101, on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Import Arinze Onuaku had a big double-double with 28 points and 19 rebounds, while veteran point guard Jimmy Alapag finished with 16 points, including seven of the team’s last nine points in a tight endgame.
Jared Dillinger also had 16 for Meralco, which improved to 8-2 this conference. Chris Newsome also contributed 11 points and seven rebounds as the Bolts clinched a twice-to-beat advantage for their quarterfinal matchup.
They needed to weather a huge performance from Abueva, who had 27 points and nine rebounds for Alaska before fouling out late in the contest. He scored 20 of those after the halftime break as he led his Aces back from a double-digit first half deficit.
It wasn’t enough for Alaska on this night, though, as import Shane Edwards was held scoreless in the second half and finished with just 12 points.
The Aces stumbled down to a three-way tie for third to fifth places with Barangay Ginebra and Rain or Shine. All three teams have 6-4 marks.
Vic sManuel finished with 13 points for the Aces, while three other players – RJ Jazul, Cyrus Baguio, and Chris Banchero – added 12 markers.
