#PBA2016 Govs’ Cup Roundup: August 19, 2016

TNT continued to roll unscathed in the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup after beating Phoenix last night even as GlobalPort caught a big fish when they upset San Miguel Beer.

TNT KA TROPA over PHOENIX FUEL MASTERS, 124-117

The TNT KaTropa continued to its terrific run in the 2016 Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup, beating the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 124-117, to notch a sixth consecutive win to open the conference on Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.


Asian import Michael Madanly scored 30 points, including 8-for-13 (61%) shooting from three-point range to lead the way for TNT, which is now a perfect 6-0 in the standings.

Mychal Ammons turned in another solid outing with 22 points, 18 rebounds and three assists while the KaTropa locals contributed as well, paced by Ranidel De Ocampo, who hit three treys en route to 17 points.

Kris Rosales added 13 points in under 19 minutes of play while star point guard Jayson Castro tallied 11 points and eight assists.

TNT as a team shot 19-for-41 (46%) from beyond the arc. According to PBA head of statistics Fidel Mangonon, the KaTropa’s total of 19 tied the season-high and equaled the sixth highest total all-time.

Eugene Phelps finished with 49 points and 18 rebounds but was far from enough for Phoenix in this one.

GLOBALPORT BATANG PIER over SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN, 98-92

The GlobalPort Batang Pier got off to a huge start but needed to make some clutch plays down the stretch to hold off San Miguel, 98-92, in the 2016 Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup on Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

GlobalPort opened the game on a 21-3 run but saw their lead dissipate in the second quarter. Still, they got some key plays from stars Stanley Pringle and Terrence Romeo as they picked up their second straight win.

Pringle scored a team-high 25 points while Romeo added 18 markers and seven assists for the Batang Pier, which are now 2-4 for the conference.

Import Michael Glover posted a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds while three other players chipped in with eight points apiece.

They also spoiled a big night for San Miguel import Arizona Reid, who scored 41 points but pouted through his team’s last possessions. The Beermen are now 4-2.
