We continue our Asian Basketball Journal this week by congratulating the new CBA champions, the Sichuan Blue Whales! It was a golden turnaround for a team that finished at 18th place last season, and it’s a validation of Hamed Haddadi’s status as Asia’s best big man. Also, the 2016 KBL and ABL Finals have kicked off, while the IBF Superleague is down to the final four teams. Meanwhile the windup to the SBL, NBL-Japan, and LBl seasons are moving along as well. Like in previous posts, I won’t be going into a lot of detail. Doing the Asian Basketball Journal has been a little challenging this year, but it’s not because there hasn’t been much happening. On the contrary, the CBA is entering the semifinals of its annual playoffs, and the KBL just crowned its regular season champion. It’s been a couple of weeks since the last Asian Basketball Journal, and, for sure, a lot has happened in the various pro hoops leagues around Asia. Playoff positioning has been the theme for teams in the CBA, KBL, and NBL-Japan, while the SBL just had a successful staging of its All-Star Weekend. The IBF Superleague and LBL, too, have seen big games these past two weeks, with Petrochimi and Al Riyadi currently reigning in their respective club circuits. As always, a lot has happened since the last edition of the Asian Basketball Journal. In the CBA, Xinjiang slid back down to second spot as last season’s runner-up Liaoning moved up to first place. GuangDong also tumbled to further as Shandong moved into the top 3. The 2016 CBA All-Star Weekend also came and went. Over in the KBL, Ulsan Mobis sustained a couple of losses but remained tied for first place with Goyang, while Jeonju and Anyang remained locked at third spot. Link Tochigi and Toyota remained the top two clubs in Japan’s NBL, while Pure Youth construction continued to lord it over in Taiwan’s SBL. Once powerhouse Chemidor Tehran slid down to fifth spot in Iran’s Superleague, and Al Riyadi Beirut remains the only undefeated squad in Lebanon’s LBL!
