The UAAP: Season 77: The King Eagle Flies HIGH!

Kiefer Ravena of Ateneo torched UE with a career-high
38 points in a thrilling overtime win for the Blue Eagles

The Blue Eagles knew what awaited them if they finished the first round of play with a win over the University of the East Red Warriors; solo first place atop the standings after most critics projected them to be in the middle of the pack (or missing out in the Final Four) due to this being a "rebuilding" year. Well after 7 games, the Eagles are not in the middle and definitely not at the bottom. Being at the top feels so very good but that feeling should not last too long since another 7 games await them.

The Top Five #UAAP77 Shooting Guards as of August 2, 2014

Kiefer Ravena and Mike Tolomia are shoo-ins here, but how about the other three?

Kiefer Ravena and Mike Tolomia are two of the brightest stars outside of the PBA, and it’s no surprise they figure prominently in these rankings. Another top-shelf SG, however, doesn’t crack the top five – La Salle’s Almond Vosotros, who’s had to split time between off-guard and point guard to compensate for the season-ending injury of Thomas Torres. Joining Kief and Mike are two up-and-coming players and Kief’s old running-mate in high school.

Without further ado, here they are – the top five UAAP shooting guards as of August 2, 2014:

*These rankings are based on average Player Efficiency (EFF) calculations.
**EFF = {[(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks) – (turnovers + field goals missed + free throws missed)] ÷ # of games}

What's better than writing about basketball? Watching LIVE basketball!

I haven't been to a live UAAP Mens' Senior Basketball game in years. I think my last game was 10 years ago, maybe more. Fortunately, I was able to watch the first round game between Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University last Sunday. The coliseum was packed and loud! Nothing beats cheering for your alma mater!

Looking Ahead: Heat x Spurs Destined for a Finals Rematch?

The following piece was written by former RP-Youth player and current Ateneo Blue Eagle Von Pessumal, who was one of my (excellent) high school students a few years ago.

            Yes, it’s that time of the year again: The Playoffs. Where getting 16 wins translates to an NBA championship, and anything short of that is a failure. At this part of every season, it becomes quite evident that there are only a handful of teams that can truly be labeled as legitimate contenders; the rest are merely pretenders. With that being said, here is my potential NBA Finals Matchup this coming June:

Will it be a monumental rematch of last year's Final's protagonists?
Ateneo Blue Eagle Von Pessumal thinks so. Agree or disagree?
