J-Jay Alejandro and the Filipinos didn't exactly have a cake walk against Junrong Thng and the Singaporeans. |
Notes:
The Filipinos had to scramble in the final 10 minutes before beating the Singaporeans and tying the Indons at the top of the standings with their second win in as many games.
J-Jay Alejandro scored 13 points and Rey Nambatac added 12 to lead the Philippines in a win that shouldn’t have been this close. The home team, however, showed great determination in never letting the Pinoys blow the game open. Seemingly more athletic than their Pinoy counterparts, the Singaporean frontline gave Kent Lao and Jay Javelosa all they could handle. Delvin Goh led the home squad’s charge, scoring 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting while also grabbing 7 rebounds and dishing out 5 assists. His diminutive partner, Junrong Thng, continued to impress at the playmaker position, scoring 13 points to go along with 7 boards, 3 triples, and 2 dimes. Despite having a tough time, Lao and Javelosa still gave a good account of themselves, pairing up for 18 points and 10 rebounds.
In the day’s first game, Malaysia gave Laos its third straight beating and officially knocked them off from contention for any of the top 3 spots. Lian Wei Loo, Zhi Hao Tan, and Jia Xuan Tong scored 19, 17, and 16 markers respectively to lead the Malaysians in getting just their first win. Cheng Toong Ng also played well, producing a double-double line of 10 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals, 3assists and 2 rejections for Malaysian coach Kian Ann Yong. Malaysia still has a chance to book a ticket to the FIBA-Asia U18 tourney in Ulanbataar, Mongolia if it can win against either the Philippines or Indonesia.
