Team Pilipinas continued its unbeaten run in the 2012 SEABA U18 tourney in Singapore, but, again, the Pinoys needed a big second half to nail their third straight win.
LSGH’s Mario Bonleon, NU’s J-Jay Alejandro, and UE’s Mark Olayon all scored in double-figures to lead Olsen Racela’s squad over a gritty Malaysian quintet. Bonleon, Alejandro, and Olayon each hit 2 treys to help the Filipinos officially claim one of the SEABA slots for the 2012 FIBA-Asia U18 Championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. It was, however, the brilliant play of former Ateneo Blue Eaglet Jay Javelosa that really sparked things for Team Pilipinas. The 6’4” slotman registered 8 points on top grabbing 14 boards and blocking 2 shots to underscore his solid play around the basket. Javelosa will need to produce similar, or even better, numbers against the erstwhile unbeaten Indons in their next game if they want to sweep the field. His frontcourt mates, RR De Leon, Kent Lao, and 6’6” Xavier Stallion Isaac Go will also need to be
productive.In the day’s other game, the Indons likewise enjoyed their third win in as many outings, beating the hapless Laotians. Laos actually managed to remain within striking distance after the first period, 17-10, but they scored only 2 points in the second frame while allowing Indonesia to pour in 21 markers. That all but sealed the win for the Nat Canson’s crew, who have also booked the sub-zone’s second ticket to the Ulaanbaatar meet. Indonesia’s twin towers, Kristianto Halim and Vincent Kosasih, scored 16 points each while grabbing a combined 25 rebounds to lead the Indon effort. Backcourt partners Juan Kokodiputro and Katon Baskoro also did well, pouring in 10 points each. Everything is set in what should be a titanic tussle between the Indons and the Pinoys today, which is the last day of the competition. The winner between Indonesia and the Philippines will be crowned the 2012 SEABA U18 Champion!
