2014 Filoil Flying V hoops action continued yesterday with more
Women's and Juniors games.

Roundup:
In the day’s opener, the UPIS Junior Maroons bounced back from their opening day loss by turning back the challenge of the San Sebastian Staglets, 87-64. Bannered by big man Enzo Barraquias, John Gregorio, and the Gomez de Liano brothers, UPIS opened things up in the second quarter and never looked back. Barraquias ended up with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals, while Gregorio added 12 points, 6 boards, and 5 dimes. Juan and Javi Gomez de Liano, both of whom finished grade school in Ateneo, combined for 23 points, 17 rebounds, and 6 assists in the victory. Jem Cruz starred for Baste with 10 points, 20 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots.

The second game saw the UP Lady Maroons record a convincing 57-49 win over the FEU Lady Tamaraws. The Iskos drew inspired performances from Bea Daez and Maan Wong, who scored 25 and 14 points respectively. The pint-sized Daez connected thrice from long range while also grabbing 6 rebounds and blocking 1 shot. Wong, for her part, reeled in a sublime double-double with 14 markers and 16 boards. Tin Alliermo also did well for the Diliman posse with 16 rebounds and 2 blocks. Ana Valenzona had 20 points to pace FEU’s losing stand.

Bea Daez waxed hot for the Lady Maroons, hitting 3 treys.

In the third game, the Adamson Lady Falcons absorbed a sound beating from the UST Tigresses, 73-58. Adamson stuck close in the first quarter, but the Lady Falcons unraveled soon after in the face of aggressive play on both ends from UST. Lore Rivera and Kristine Siapoc paired up for 5 treys and 34 markers for the España quintet, while burly Maica Cortes racked up 10 points on top of 14 rebounds in a dominant showing. Meanwhile, Jinkie Balasta shone brightly once again for Adamson, scoring 25 points.

In game #4, the CEU Lady Scorpions kept the RTU Lady Thunders winless with a blowout win, 86-58. Marjorie Mercado and Shaddy Ogunsemuyen each had double-doubles to tow CEU to its maiden win of the tourney. Mercado recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Ogunsemuyen had 10 and 16. Demi Lou Villanueva was CEU’s main scoring threat, dropping 21 points on 8/14 FG shooting. Wiz Duazo, Angel Rodriguez, and Roj Inoferio were the bright spots for RTU – each of them scored 13 markers.

The final match of the day resulted in the JRU Light Bombers frustrating the Ateneo Blue Eaglets, 71-66. The Eaglets actually led early on and at the half, 31-28, but JRU flipped the switch in the third period and coasted to the win. Darius Estrella’s double-double led the Light Bombers. He finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. He was backstopped by Andrei Dada, King Astero, and Jamil Garcia, who combined for 39 points. On the other end, the Katipunan quintet was paced by the combined 43 points of Enzo Joson, Shaun Ildefonso, and Marc Salandanan. It is worth noting, however, that Ateneo didn’t have its three RP-Youth players – Jolo Mendoza, Mike Nieto, and Matt Nieto – all of whom are, reportedly, still abroad training.

Ateneo had a tough time containing Darius Estrella of JRU.
