Alaska regained control of
its 2014 PBA Philippine Cup semifinals series against Rain or Shine thanks to a
convincing win in Game 3. Not surprisingly, it was Calvin Abueva again who
carried the Aces past the seemingly lethargic Elasto-Painters.

ALASKA ACES over RAIN OR SHINE
ELASTO-PAINTERS, 94-78
Calvin Abueva posted a
career-high 28 points and 14 rebounds as he led his Alaska Aces past Rain or
Shine, 94-78, in Game Three of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals on Monday at
the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Abueva scored 12 points in
the fourth quarter as the Aces took a 2-1 series lead in their best-of-seven
clash.
The Aces’ defense was in
full control in the first half, holding the Elasto Painters down to just 27
points over the first two periods, which resulted in a 15-point spread at the
break.
Rain or Shine managed to
score 51 in the second half, but Alaska kept pace, never allowing the Elasto
Painters to come closer than eight points in the payoff period.
Alaska’s Eric Menk also
had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards, while Cyrus Baguio and JVee
Casio each added 11 markers.
The Aces just bullied ROS
inside here, scoring 40 points in the paint and a dozen second-chance scores.
In contrast, the Painters tallied only 30 points in the paint and just 2
second-chance points. Coach Yeng Guiao’s wards were also grossly outworked on
the glass, 45-58.
Raymond Almazan came off
the bench to toss in a team-high 20 points for the Painters, while Paul Lee
dropped 13 markers in support. The Lee-thal Weapon, however, shot just 3/10
from the field.
Line of the Game: Calvin Abueva - 28pts, 14rebs, 3stls, 1ast, 1blk, 9/14 FGs.
