Jolo Mendoza and the Eaglets are one win away from sweeping the #UAAP77Jrs elims! |
The Ateneo de Manila HS Blue Eaglets faced little resistance in blasting the UE Junior Warriors, 101-77. The Eaglets’ starters outscored their UE counterparts, 64-38, with the Nieto twins and Jolo Mendoza combining for 54 points. The twins also paired up for 22 boards, while fellow graduating senior Brix Ramos was solid with 9 markers and 8 assists. As for the Reds, Camillus Altamirano top-scored with 33 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals, while Carlo Garcia and Kent Contorno added 15 and 11 markers respectively. Ateneo is a win away from an outright Finals berth, while UE remains winless in thirteen games.

Keeping the Junior Warriors company at the bottom are the UPIS Junior Maroons, who fell short against FEU-FERN, 60-52. Coach Allan Gregorio’s wards were competitive against the Baby Tamaraws, but they weren’t able to completely turn the tables on their fellow Diliman-based quintet. The Green and Gold were paced by beanpole Christian Fajarito, who dropped 21 points and hauled down 11 rebounds, while fellow frontliner Brandrey Bienes added 15 markers and 11 boards. Jaggy Gregorio scored 12 points to lead UPIS’s charge, while Javi Gomez de Liano and Allane Barles each tallied 11. This win kept FEU-FERN’s twice-to-beat hopes alive, but they need to beat De La Salle-Zobel on Saturday to stay in the hunt.

FEU's Christian Fajarito has the size to be a solid player in the Seniors Division. |
This brings us to the Junior Archers, who dominated the UST Tiger Cubs, 66-53, to keep the flame of their own twice-to-beat chances burning. Former Batang Gilas candidate Aljun Melecio was once again brilliant for the Alabang-based squad, tossing in 19 points to offset his 7 turnovers. Quinito Banzon was also effective, recording 14 markers to go with 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Big man Noah Webb struggled putting the ball in the basket, but he did take down 10 boards on top of 2 steals. On the other end, Miguel Jison scored 18 points and collared 11 caroms for the Cubs, who have already been eliminated from Final Four contention. DLSZ can still notch a playoff for the second seed if they beat FEU-FERN on Saturday, NU loses to the Eaglets, and UST trips Adamson.

Speaking of Adamson, the Baby Falcons registered another upset win at the expense of the Bullpups, 74-64. Batang Gilas big man Mark Dyke was shackled here, tallying just 6 points in nearly 30 minutes of play, even as his Adamson counterpart, Fred Tungcab, flourished with a near triple-double line of 8 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists. Wingmen James Pasturan and Dave Cabanilla led the Goldwyn Monteverde-mentored Baby Falcons, who have now gone 5-1 in the second round. The San Marcelino-based five can still finish as high as second seed depending on how the other Saturday games play out.
