The Blackwater Elite picked up their first win of the PBA Governors’ Cup in a shocker over crowd favorite Barangay Ginebra, 83-77, in an out-of-town game on Saturday in Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte.
Blackwater and Ginebra were tied at 77-apiece with 1:04 remaining but the Elite went on a 6-0 run to finish the ballgame.
Eddie Laure hit a free throw to make it 78-77 and, after Dorian Pena missed two from the free throw line, Marcus Douthit earned a trip of his own and made both for a three-point Blackwater lead, 80-77.
Brian Heruela then made a huge steal on Ginebra’s inbound pass and turned it into a four-point game, 81-77, with just 18.2 seconds left before Laure sealed the win with two more from the stripe.
Douthit finished with 24 points while Bam Gamalinda had 18. Reil Cervantes added 14 – eight of those in the fourth quarter, including two three-pointers early in the period.
Ginebra’s prolific import, Orlando Johnson, finished with 30 points – a relatively low figure after averaging 47.7 in his first three appearances.
The Kings continued to miss the services of Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar.
Blackwater and Ginebra are now tied at the bottom of the standings with identical 1-3 records.
