#PBA2016 Commish Cup Quarterfinal Roundup: April 19, 2016

The Bgy. Ginebra Gin Kings were booted out of the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs after losing to Rain or Shine even as the Alaska Aces forced a rubber match in their quarterfinal series opposite Tropang TNT.

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters breezed through their quarterfinal matchup against Barangay Ginebra after a 102-89 victory in Game Two of their Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinal series on Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

That completed a two-game sweep of their best-of-three playoff series with the Elasto Painters now awaiting the winner of San Miguel-Star series.

Jeff Chan scored 22 points – including hitting four three-pointers – while JR Quinahan added 21 to pace Rain or Shine. Rookie Maverick Ahanmisi chipped in with 13 points, all of them in the second half.




Rain or Shine import Pierre Henderson-Niles, meanwhile, had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Othyus Jeffers led Ginebra with 27 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, while Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar each had 14 points and eight boards in the defeat.

ALASKA ACES over TROPANG TNT, 85-81

The Alaska Aces kept their playoff campaign alive after surviving a tough clash with Tropang TNT, 85-81, to force a do-or-die rubber match for the a place in the Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Alaska, the No. 3 seed in these playoffs, and Tropang TNT will have a chance to move into the semifinals with a win in Game Three.

The Aces closed the game out on an 11-4 run to come away with the win.

Import Rob Dozier led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Calvin Abueva and Sonny Thoss each added 15 for Alaska.




Thoss also had eight rebounds while Abueva played some terrific defense on top of his contribution on the offensive end.

They needed to weather a huge performance from TNT import David Simon, who had 31 points and 15 rebounds in the game. Jayson Castro, too, had a solid game, shrugging off a slow start to finish with 17 points, 11 assists and five rebounds.
