The Alaska Aces and its newly-crowned Best Player of the Conference Calvin Abueva showed plenty of fight in Game 4, beating Rain or Shine, 111-99, to avoid a sweep of the Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Alaska import Rob Dozier posted 23 points and eight rebounds while Chris Banchero added 17 points and eight assists as the Aces cut their series deficit down to 3-1.

Abueva, who was awarded the conference’s top individual award before the game, had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

Three other Aces – RJ Jazul, Sonny Thoss, and Cyrus Baguio, finished in double-figures in scoring.

The Aces led, 54-39, at the halftime break, and there was no let-up from them in the third quarter. The Aces hit five three-pointers as a team – with Banchero hitting two and RJ Jazul, Dondon Hontiveros, and Kevin Racal each chipping in with one apiece – as they dropped 36 big points on the Elasto Painters’ defense in the third.

That gave them a comfortable 23-point lead, 90-67, with one period left to play.

Rain or Shine got a huge lift from Gabe Norwood, who scored nine of the team’s first 10 points, to open the final period. Maverick Ahanmisi, too, played big, hitting two big triples as the Elasto Painters challenged, came within single digits late in the game.

Though Alaska was able to maintain its lead, there was plenty of color late in the contest with Abueva getting ejected for his second technical foul of the game and Banchero getting caught throwing a forearm at Jericho Cruz in retaliation, drawing himself a flagrant foul penalty one in the process.

Ahanimisi scored 30 big points for Rain or Shine in the defeat.
