ALASKA ACES over RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO-PAINTERS, 86-78
Box Scores.
Facing elimination for the second straight game, the Alaska Aces kept their flickering championship hopes alive after taking Game 5, 86-78, and cut Rain or Shine’s Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals lead down to 3-2 on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Calvin Abueva led the way with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 blocks. He scored half of those in the fourth quarter, which his Aces won, 30-21.
Import Rob Dozier added 14 points and 8 rebounds, while also finishing with three steals and three blocks. Dondon Hontiveros came up with 12 big points – including three three-pointers – from off the bench while RJ Jazul and Cyrus Baguio both finished in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The Aces were able to keep the scores low for the first time in these Finals. It was the first time that the winning team scored under 105 points. Neither team had scored less than 97 points in the first four games of the series.
Jeff Chan led the Elasto Painters with 17 points, while Paul Lee posted 18. They could not get much from Pierre Henderson-Niles, though, as the import finished with just six points and eight rebounds, while turning the ball over five times.
The Aces have now won two consecutive games but have to win two more to complete an unlike comeback from 3-0, something that the San Miguel Beermen did to them in the Philippine Cup Finals.
Lines of the Game:
Calvin Abueva (ALA) - 20pts, 13rebs, 2asts, 2blks, 1stl, 7/19 FGs
Jeff Chan (ROS) - 17pts, 4rebs, 2asts, 1 triple, 7/11 FGs
