#PBA2016 Govs’ Cup Roundup: September 10-11, 2016

It was another wicked weekend in the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup as Alaska, SMB, Meralco, and TNT came out with big wins!

ALASKA ACES over PHOENIX FUEL MASTERS, 103-87
Box Scores. 

Calvin Abueva piled up 18 points and 21 rebounds as the Alaska Aces boosted their hunt for a playoff spot after breezing past the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 103-87, in the PBA Governors’ Cup Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.


Import LaDontae Henton also filled the statsheet with 15 points, 20 rebounds, three assists and four steals. RJ Jazul top-scored for Alaska with 19 points, while Sonny Thoss (11 points), Chris Banchero (11 points) and JVee Casio (10 points) also had solid contributions for the Aces’ balanced attack.

With the win, Alaska, now at 5-5, forced a four-way tie with Phoenix, NLEX and Meralco for fifth to eighth places.

The result also sent Star and GlobalPort out of the playoff race, leaving five teams, including Rain or Shine (4-5), in a tug-of-war for the lower half of the eight-team quarterfinals cast.

SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN over RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO-PAINTERS, 82-75
Box Scores. 

The San Miguel Beermen locked up a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals and also put a slight dent on Rain or Shine’s playoff hopes after pulling out a hard-earned 82-75 victory in the PBA Governors’ Cup Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Import Mike Singletary tallied 23 points and 12 boards while Arwind Santos had his best game of the conference with 20 points and nine rebounds to pace the defending champions.

San Miguel improved to 7-3, assuring them of a top four finish. Rain or Shine is stuck at ninth place after sliding to 4-6, half a game behind four teams (Phoenix, Meralco, NLEX, Alaska) that currently sit on fourth to eighth places.

MERALCO BOLTS over MAHINDRA ENFORCERS, 86-83
Box Scores. 

The Meralco Bolts gave themselves a shot at the top four and denied the Mahindra Enforcer an outright twice-to-beat ticket after escaping with an 86-83 victory in their closely contested PBA Governors’ Cup tiff on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Allen Durham collected 34 points and 17 boards to spearhead Meralco (6-5) which tied Mahindra’s record (6-5) and assured themselves of at least a playoff for the No.4 spot

Jared Dillinger scored 12 points and eight rebounds while Chris Newsome added 10 markers.

James White (MAH) - 27pts, 12rebs, 1ast, 1stl, 10/19 FGs.

HIGHLIGHTS:



TNT KA TROPA over STAR HOTSHOTS, 115-105
Box Scores. 

TNT KaTropa flexed their muscles in the second half to beat the hard-fighting but already-ousted Star Hotshots, 115-105, in a win that moved them closer to securing the No.1 spot in the PBA Governors’ Cup Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Larry Fonacier scored 23 points to go along with seven boards while Jayson Castro made 21 points, three rebounds and five assists as they carried TNT (9-1) which had to shrug off a slow start in order to notch their ninth win of the tournament.

TNT is now just a victory away from clinching the top seed in the playoffs, with No.2 Ginebra (7-2) as the only team standing in KaTropa’s way.
