#PBA2017 All-Star Week Roundup

Images from PBA.ph.

This season saw a unique set-up to the annual PBA All-Star festivities, what with the league opting for a week-long series of events highlighted by not one, not two, but three All-Star Games featuring different iterations of Gilas Pilipinas against All-Stars hailing from the country's three main island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. When I first heard of this idea, I thought it was brilliant for two main reasons. One, it would be a great way for the league to emphasize their support for the national team, and, two, it would bring the PBA stars to not just one, but a total of three provinces. It's a small step, but I hope this move by the league indicates a progressively stronger stake in the national team and a gradual change in their approach to more constantly bringing the games to the fans outside of Mega Manila.

Game Capsules:

GILAS PILIPINAS over MINDANAO ALL-STARS, 114-114
Box Scores.

Kicking off this year's festivities, the national team settled for a 114-114 draw against the Mindanao Selection Wednesday at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan De Oro City.

Star's Mark Barroca hit a booming triple with 49 seconds to go to tie things up for Mindanao. Both teams failed to connect from that point on as an All-Star game involving Gilas Pilipinas ended in a draw for the second time in the last four years.

TNT's Troy Rosario led Mindanao with a game-high 28 points off the bench, and he shared MVP honors with Phoenix rookie Matthew Wright of Gilas. PJ Simon added 14 points, while Barroca was good for 13.

Wright also came off the pine and led the national team with 22 points. Terrence Romeo dazzled his way to 18 and 8 assists, while Fajardo (16 points and 15 rebounds) and RR Pogoy (14 points and 13 rebounds) each submitted a double-double. (ABS-CBN.com)

Box Scores.

Calvin Abueva scored 26 points and Terrence Romeo added 25 to lead Gilas Pilipinas to a 125-112 win over Team Visayas in the third and final leg of the PBA all-star series at Hoops Dome.

Fielding its entire lineup that will play for the Southeast Asian Basketball Championship minus Andray Blatche, Gilas rallied behind Romeo in the second quarter to come back from 15 points down and used some stingy defense in the fourth to upend the All-Stars.

June Mar Fajardo added 18 points and 13 boards for Gilas, while Troy Rosario and RR Pogoy scored 14 and 10 points respectively. Five players scored in double-figures for the Visayas All-Stars led by LA Tenorio, James Yap, and Jeff Chan, who tallied 19, 18, and 17 points respectively. (ABS-CBN.com)

#PBA2017 Commish Cup Power Rankings - April 12, 2017

San Miguel Beer is on top!
(image from the PBA)
This first appeared on PBA.ph.

To say that the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup has been interesting is a gross understatement. Sure, everyone expected the Beermen to continue their strong play, but did anyone see the Meralco Bolts rising so fast up the table? How about the Alaska Aces and the Star Hotshots?

This conference is slowly shaping up to be wide open, and we wouldn't want it any other way, right? I have SMB probably continuing to dominate in almost every remaining game in the elims, while I expect the Katropa and the Gin Kings to gain steam as the weeks pass by. I think Alaska is good enough to hold on to a top four spot, but I'm not as confident of the Hotshots' ability to do so. Oh well, let's just see how things unravel.

Let's look at our first power rankings for this conference.

#PBA2017 Philippine Cup Finals Roundup: March 5, 2017

Image from the PBA.
The starting five of the San Miguel Beermen dominated in Game 5 to annex the PBA Philippine Cup title for the third year in a row! In effect, the Beermen are the recipients of the PBA's perpetual trophy, and they are only the second team to achieve a Philippine Cup 3-peat after Talk N Text did it from 2011 to 2013.

June Mar Fajardo and Arwind Santos each scored 21 points on a combined 15-of-22 FG shooting to lead San Miguel, which had to stave off a late rally from the never-say-die Ginebra quintet.

The San Miguel Beermen surged ahead in the Oppo PBA Philippine Cup Finals after getting a strong performance from PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo to beat Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 99-88, in Game 3 on Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

#PBA2017 Philippine Cup Finals Game 3 Preview: Can San Miguel bounce back?

Image from the PBA/Inquirer.
*This also appears on PBA.ph.

The difference between Games 1 and 2 of the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup Finals was like night and day. Unlike in Game 1, Ginebra did not start flat in Game 2. Tim Cone's wards were, by far, the more aggressive team early on, but for all their bravado and energy, the Gin Kings weren't able to convincingly get rid of the Beermen. Ginebra needed an extra period to stave off the defending champs.

So now that we have Game 3 looming, the big question is can San Miguel Beer bounce back and retake control, or will Ginebra capitalize on their momentum to notch a 2-1 series lead.

#PBA2017 Philippine Cup Finals: Kraken is key for SMB

Image from the PBA/Inquirer.
*This also appears on PBA.ph.

Where June Mar goes, SMB goes. That's just how it is for the defending champion, three-peat seeking, perpetual trophy hungry San Miguel Beermen.

Offensively speaking, June Mar has struggled a bit against the Kings this conference — and that's without Greg Slaughter, too! In three games against Ginebra, the Kraken has averaged just 12.0 points and 11.3 rebounds per outing, which is much lower than his conference averages of 19.3 points and 14.8 boards per contest. He is still capable of being productive, sure, as he showed in Game 1, but, somehow, he just cannot dominate the Kings as well as he can most of the other PBA clubs.

Images from the PBA/Inquirer.

The 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup semifinals was quite memorable, and here we are to give you an ICYMI recap of all the exciting action!

Game Capsules:

SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN over TNT KA TROPA, 4-3
Box Scores:
GAME 1 - SMB 111, TNT 98
GAME 2 - TNT 87, SMB 85
GAME 3 - TNT 98, SMB 92

GAME 5 - TNT 101, SMB 94
GAME 6 - SMB 104, TNT 88
GAME 7 - SMB 96, TNT 83

The Beermen were tested here. They were down 2-3 in the series and looked pretty much on the ropes until a couple of lucky twists of fate nudged them into Game 7 and an eventual series win. Troy Rosario's absence was key in Game 6, and Jayson Castro's injury prevented him from playing in Game 7. It was a fortunate turn for SMB, and an unlucky tumble for TNT. This was a tough series that seems to have sharpened the Beermen for the Finals, where they are currently up, 1-0.
