#PBA2017 Commish Cup Roundup: April 21, 2017

PHOENIX FUEL MASTERS over ALASKA ACES, 94-86
Box Scores. 

Losing a heartbreaker to Rain or Shine on Holy Wednesday, Phoenix responded with a gutsy performance to get its 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup campaign back on track.

The Fuel Masters took advantage of a Calvin Abueva-less Alaska Aces to score a 94-86 victory Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Phoenix snapped a two-game skid to improve to 3-4 in the mid-season conference while the Aces dropped to 4-2 following back-to-back defeats.

Jameel McKay finished with a conference-high 42 points on top of 22 rebounds He also had two steals and two blocks.

Former Aces Cyrus Baguio and RJ Jazul also did some heavy lifting for Phoenix, helping the Fuel Masters beat Alaska for the first time in franchise history. The two veteran guards combined for 22 points in starting roles.

Missing Calvin Abueva as the Beast waits for his facial mask to protect his busted lip, the Aces have dropped two straight after starting a perfect 4-0.

Cory Jefferson led Alaska with 31 points and 13 rebounds but only JVee Casio turned in a decent performance from the local crew, scoring 14 off the bench. (ABS-CBN.com)

TNT KA TROPA over GLOBALPORT BATANG PIER, 109-88
Box Scores. 

TNT KaTropa registered what was easily the best win of their current streak, dominating the Globalport Batang Pier, 109-88, Friday in the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup at the Big Dome.

Shooting 48 percent from the field, his best performance in the PBA so far, import Donte Greene led the KaTropa with 33 points and 10 rebounds.

Jayson Castro scored 15 points, all in the first half, to pace tne TNT locals while Ranidel De Ocampo added 14. Larry Fonacier was good for 12 points off the bench.

Malcolm White carried Globalport with 21 points and 16 rebounds but it was not enough to push the Batang Pier to victory.

Terrence Romeo added 20 as Globalport fell to 1-5 for the new conference. (ABS-CBN.com)

#PBA2017 Philippine Cup Quarterfinals Roundup: February 6-7, 2017

The 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals closed with  a bang as Star, TNT, and Ginebra completed the semifinal cast.


Game Capsules: 

STAR HOTSHOTS over PHOENIX FUEL MASTERS, 91-71
Box Scores. 

The Star Hotshots just seem to have Phoenix’s number as they cruised to another blowout of the Fuel Masters, 91-71, to secure their place in the Oppo PBA Philippine Cup semifinal round on Monday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Paul Lee led the way with team-highs of 17 points and nine assists while Marc Pingris added 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting alongside nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Ian Sangalang and rookie Jio Jalalon each chipped in with 11 markers apiece in the win. (Interaksyon.com)

TNT KaTropa weathered a storm by the GlobalPort Batang Pier, 95-90, to punch a ticket to the Oppo PBA Philippine Cup semifinals on Monday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Ranidel De Ocampo spearheaded TNT with 25 points as KaTropa, who swept the best-of-three quarterfinal series, turned back a monster rally by the Batang Pier who came back from a 20-point deficit.

With the win, TNT forged a semifinal duel with defending champion San Miguel. (Interaksyon.com)

BGY. GINEBRA GIN KINGS over ALASKA ACES, 108-97
Box Scores. 

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel completed its massive comeback from a twice-to-beat disadvantage, toppling the Alaska Aces for the second time in a row, 108-97, to book the remaining Oppo PBA Philippine Cup semifinals ticket on Tuesday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The result set up a dream Manila Clasico semifinal clash between the Gin Kings and fierce rival Star Hotshots.

LA Tenorio topped Ginebra with a career-high 31 points while Aljon Mariano had a huge contribution of 20 points, also a career-high, together with eight boards as they lifted the No.7 Gin Kings to an impressive upset of No.2 Alaska.

Rookie Kevin Ferrer also scored 15 points as he and Mariano helped provide spark to Ginebra who missed Joe Devance (left foot injury) and whose main players in Japeth Aguilar and Sol Mercado battled foul trouble. (Interaksyon.com)

The 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals saw San Miguel Beer dispose of Rain or Shine, while Ginebra forced a do-or-die game against Alaska.

SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN over RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO-PAINTERS, 98-91
Box Scores. 

The No. 1-seeded San Miguel Beermen advanced to the Oppo PBA Philippine Cup semifinals after dumping the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 98-91, in their quarterfinal match on Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

RR Garcia gave San Miguel a nice surprise, exploding for 25 points from off the bench. He shot 5-for-7 from beyond the arc and scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, where the Beermen put the game away.

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters couldn’t help but be disappointed with the way they defended GlobalPort Batang Pier’s dynamic duo of Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle who combined for 72 points in their 117-99 win on Sunday.

Romeo exploded for 44 points while Pringle erupted for 28 markers as they obliterated every defender Rain or Shine sent to them.

The race for playoff seats in the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup continued to heat up this past Friday as Mahindra and Alaska got big wins.

Game Capsules:

MAHINDRA FLOOD BUSTER over NLEX ROAD WARRIORS, 106-96
Box Scores. 

Alex Mallari fell one assist shy of a triple-double as the Mahindra Floodbuster registered their third victory after rolling past the NLEX Road Warriors, 106-96, in the clash of already-eliminated teams in the Oppo PBA Philippine Cup Friday at Cuneta Astrodome.

Mallari tallied a career-high 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds and nine assists for an all-around effort for the Floodbuster who improved to 3-7.

Sunday gameday saw Alaska book a huge win over Mahindra, while Ginebra was upset by Phoenix in action from the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup.

ALASKA ACES over MAHINDRA FLOOD BUSTER, 107-91
Box Scores. 

The Alaska Aces put together a strong finish as they went on a big closing run to turn away the Mahindra Floodbuster, 107-91, to notch a crucial Oppo PBA PhilippienCup victory on Sunday at the Philsports Arena.

Alaska and Mahindra were tied at 76-all early in the fourth quarter before a 31-13 run by the Aces allowed them to run away with it in the end.
