RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO PAINTERS over B-MEG DERBY ACE LLAMADOS, 95-82
The opening game in the PBA Governors' Cup turned out to be a lopsided win by the
Rain or Shine import, Arizona Reid, over his B-MEG counterpart, Stefon Hannah.
Reid churned out a huge double-double with 36 points and 17 rebounds, but he sat out the last few minutes after suffering leg cramps.
Gabe Norwood, Larry Rodriguez, Jeff Chan and Beau Belga provided the needed help as Rain or Shine got the very first win in the conference.
Hannah, the Finals MVP in the recent NBA D-League season, went 0-of-13 from the field in the first half, and only made his first bucket midway through the third period. He finished with a paltry 8 points on 4-for-23 FG shooting.
Rain or Shine led by as many as 16, 91-75, on an 11-4 run capped by RJ Jazul with a
three-pointer coming off the bench in the 4th quarter.
Joe Devance, recently acquired from Air21 in exchange for KG Canaleta and Jondan Salvador, and James Yap carried the cudgels for B-Meg.

MERALCO BOLTS over PETRON BLAZE BOOSTERS, 105-100

CHAMP Oguchi was expected to deliver the goods, but when Mark Isip joined the fray, Meralco proved to be hard to beat. The Bolts poured on the heat in the first three quarters before relying on Isip in holding off the Petron Blaze Boosters last June 12.
Isip nearly matched his career-high by coming off the bench for 28 points while Oguchi notched 26 points and 10 rebounds as Meralco won a conference-opener for the first time in three tries despite the absence of a couple of key players.
It was a sorry loss for Petron (formerly San Miguel Beer), which is looking to bounce back from a sorry Commissioner’s Cup finish, where it wound up last. But that’s not to say they didn’t give it a fight. Despite falling behind by 21 points, the Boosters made it a close 98-102 game behind the late-game heroics of Jay Washington and Alex Cabagnot.
Washington and Cabagnot each wound up with 18 points to pace Petron and three other locals scored at least 11 points each as they vainly tried to make up for Ricky Harris’ very disappointing debut. Harris came in as replacement for Mike Taylor, who tore his hamstring in a tune-up game early last week. Harris scored only eight points after going 3-for-15 from the field and 1-for-4 from the stripe.

BGY. GINEBRA GIN KINGS over POWERADE TIGERS
Debuting Ginebra import Curtis Stinson didn’t need to score much to help the Kings to a triumphant start in the PBA Governors Cup. The reigning NBA D-League MVP made a difference taking the point guard chores as Ginebra topped Powerade, 92-80 last June 12.
Stinson had solid all-around numbers of 15 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals and 1 block as the Kings won their first game after being beaten by the Talk n Text Tropang Texters in the previous conference’s championship.
On the other hand, Chris Porter churned out giant numbers but failed to get the job done for the Tigers. They sorely missed top local player Gary David who’s out with a fractured hand. Mark Macapagal, the league’s reigning back-to-back 3-point king, was 0-of-10 from the three-point area and 0-of-4 from the two-point zone.
Rob Reyes was the only Tiger who backed Porter with 10 markers. The rest had six
or less.
Yancy de Ocampo, John Wilson, Mark Caguioa and JC Intal joined Stinson in piling up significant numbers for the Kings, who established control early and dominated the Tigers practically all game long.

17 unanswered points at the start of the game got Talk n Text to a blazing start in pursuit of the 2011 grand slam. The Tropang Texters picked up from where they left off in the Commissioner’s Cup, blasting the Alaska Milk Aces in their initial outing in last June 15.
The Aces scored their first basket through import Jason Forte only after the Texters had gone on that record-setting fiery roll. Alaska just had no answer to the sterling performance the Texters. The Texters, however, witnessed their star PG Jimmy Alapag go down with a sprained ankle. He never returned to the game.
Maurice Baker, Ryan Reyes, Aaron Aban, Jason Castro, Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampo all played well, leading the Texters in their domination of the Aces. All these players put up double-digit figures.

RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO PAINTERS over AIR 21 EXPRESS, 116-94
Rain or Shine survived a second quarter meltdown and toppled Air 21, 116-94, last June 15. Arizona Reid did a little of everything, scoring a game-high 24 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and issuing 5 assists.
But the spotlight didn’t shine solely on Reid. He shared it with Beau Belga and Ronjay Buenafe, who changed the complexion of the game and cushioned the impact of Air21’s second quarter run. Belga finished with 18 points, Jeff Chan added 15 and Buenafe had 13 as the Elasto Painters picked up their second straight win.
Alpha Bangura scored 20 points, Danny Seigle had 19 and Dondon Hontiveros contributed 12 for Air 21.

Peter June Simon put on a shooting clinic in the second quarter and B-Meg rallied to beat Powerade, 103-90, on June 17. The streak-shooting guard, who played sparingly in the team’s first game because of a sprained left foot, checked in with 7:22 left in the second quarter and single-handedly changed the complexion of the match. In a spectacular display of marksmanship, Simon finished with 12 of 14 shooting from the floor for a game-high 33 points. Import Stefon Hannah improved a bit in his second game (8 points, 9 assists, 7 rebound, 5 steals), but he was still hardly impressive.
Joe Devance scored 21 points and had 9 boards, while Roger Yap had 7 points and provided the leadership vacuum for the Llamados.
The loss was the second straight for the Tigers and 5th straight dating back to the previous conference. They shot 54 percent from the field in the first quarter and built a 16-point lead twice in the period. But their shooting soured thereafter and their defense collapsed, allowing the Llamados to pull away.
Import Chris Porter led Powerade with 17 points. Mark Macapagal managed just 13 points after a 10-point first quarter while rookie Sean Anthony added 12.

PETRON BLAZE BOOSTERS over AIR 21 EXPRESS, 115-106
With hardly a rest from his long flight from the United States, Jeremy Wise started his journey with the Petron Blaze on a winning note. A replacement to Ricky Harris, Wise proved to be a prized find, leading the Boosters past the Express on June 17.
He was of big help to the Boosters especially with top local Jay Washington leaving the game early due to an injury.
With Washington out in the last three quarters, Arwind Santos was another guy who gave the team a huge boost as they bounced back from a losing debut versus Meralco last Sunday. He grabbed career-best 21 rebounds and added 15 points, and 5 blocks.
In the meantime, Dondon Hontiveros and Danny Seigle had huge numbers in their first game against their former team. Hontiveros piled up 32 points while Seigle came through with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Still, the Express fell short in their bid, suffering a second straight loss in the season-ending tourney.
Wise flew in only hours before the game, and he did appear in good shape, churning out 33 points, 6 caroms and 6 dimes in 40 minutes of action.
The two teams fought through 6 deadlocks and 12 lead changes before Petron seized control for good.
