INDONESIA WARRIORS over SAIGON HEAT, 96-68
Saigon Heat’s woeful run in the 2012 ABL continues with their fifth straight loss, this time against the Indonesia Warriors. Warriors guard Mario Wuysang had a double-double line with 16 points and 10 assists.
The Indons made their intentions clear from the beginning with Steve Thomas winning the opening tip. Things immediately did not go well for Saigon and by the midway point through the first quarter, they stared at a 15-point deficit. Rony Gunawan had a great game in the first quarter, leading the scoring for his team with 7 points. To make things even worse for the visiting team, Saigon’s main point contributor, Julius Hodge, found himself served with a disqualifying foul with just two minutes left in the first quarter. The quarter ended with the Warriors leading 36-13.
Saigon’s fighting spirit, however, kept them in the game. Jonathan Jones led a Heat uprising to cut the Warriors’ lead to just six points at the half thanks to more consistent execution on both ends of the floor.
Steven Thomas and Amin Prihantono, though, came out firing in the third to push the Warriors further ahead. Indonesia outscored Saigon, 34-8, in the third period to gain a comfortable advantage heading into the final frame. They went into cruise control from then on to seal the triumph.

SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN over BANGKOK COBRAS, 94-59
The Bangkok Cobras came into the game off their biggest win over the Westports Malaysia Dragons last weekend, but they failed to pull another upset as they went down to the San Miguel Beermen.
RJ Rizada and Doug Thomas started the game on attack mode. Rizada had 10 points and Thomas added 8 points in a first quarter that saw the Beermen get the jump on the Cobras. In the second quarter, Leo Avenido took over. He scored 10 points as the Beermen stretched their lead to 16 into halftime.
The 3rd quarter saw more of the same when Thomas had two big dunks and Kelvin Dela Peña hit back-to-back threes to stretch the lead even further to 65-37. SMB’s Thomas and Dalron Johnson also played great defense, limiting the production of both of the Cobras’ imports. Gentry Lewis managed only 14 points and Michael Earl could only add a further 9. Last week’s hero against the Dragons, Ratdech Kruatiwa, also struggled in this game, missing all 7 of his shots from the field.
The Cobras were simply outclassed in almost every field, completing only 28% of all their field goal attempts and managing only 22 points in the paint compared to the Beermen’s 56. They were also outrebounded, 31-51.

AIRASIA PHILIPPINES PATRIOTS over WESTPORTS MALAYSIA DRAGONS, 86-72
The Westports Malaysia Dragons started the 2012 ABL on a 3-game winning streak, but have since struggled. After losing an emotional game to the Bangkok Cobras at home last Wednesday, the Dragons went down again, this time to the Philippine Patriots.
Both of the Patriots’ imports, Anthony Johnson and Nakiea Miller, recorded double-doubles in this game. Johnson finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds while Miller, last year’s MVP, recorded his fourth double-double this season with 21 points and 15 rebounds. From the Dragons’ side, big man Brian Williams also recorded a double-double, his fifth in a row, with 23 points and 16 rebounds.
The Dragons started sloppily, recording 7 turnovers in the opening quarter alone. Tiras Wade’s 3rd foul in the 2nd period was another big blow for the Malaysians. Wade was also scoreless in the first 2 quarters. Meanwhile, Johnson, Miller and former Slingers PG Al Vergara combined for 19 2nd quarter points as the lead ballooned to 17 at the midway break.
The Patriots continued their strong play in the third quarter, stretching the lead to as many as 31 points. Unable to recover, the Dragons fall to their 2nd loss in 5 games as the Patriots move up to 4-1.

CHANG THAILAND SLAMMERS over SINGAPORE SLINGERS, 66-56 (OT)
This one was a tight game all throughout. Early on in the game, however, it looked like the Slingers were the better side. Import Louis Graham helped the Singaporeans take a 6-1 lead until the Slammers’ defense kicked in to tie the count at 10 by the end of the first frame. It was a low-scoring affair for the rest of the first half as both teams shot awfully from the floor.
The Slammers led by 4 at the half before scoring picked up in the 3rd period. Vaughn Canta helped the Slingers keep in step with the Slammers going into the final period. Fellow Pinoy Don Dulay, along with Singaporean Wei Long Wong and import Louis Graham, gave the Slingers a taste of the lead mid-fourth quarter, but Kenneth Walker and Chester Tolomia came up big to give the Slammers the advantage anew. Both teams missed important freebies in the dying minutes before Wei Long Wong’s last two charities tied it all up and sent the game into overtime.
The Slingers started the extra session strong, as Don Dulay and Vaughn Canta hit their shots for a 56-55 lead, but the Singaporean side’s guns fell silent from then on. Walker and DeAndre Thomas then led an 11-0 finish for the Slammers, who now go up just a game behind their victims at 3-3.
