Notes:

- Both the Arellano Braves and the UPIS Junior Maroons probably won’t do too well in the coming season, but, at least for this day, the Braves were a little better.

- Thirdy Ravena had a great first game for the Eaglets. He seems to be playing a little out of position at the PF spot, but given the scarcity of big men in the Eaglets’ roster, coach Joe Silva has no choice but to experiment with small-ball hoops. The Eaglets seem to have benefitted from it, though, using their press with precision to force a slew of turnovers from the Junior Pirates. Speed will be the name of the game for the Eaglets this season.

- Rodney Brondial might just be the most underrated big man in the UAAP. He got a nice double-double against the Pirates – 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. If he becomes consistent, then this should open things up for Alex Nuyles and Eric Camson.

- Despite their size advantage, the Eagles were outrebounded, 56-54, which is a definite red flag. Ateneo also had more turnovers and shot a paltry 47% from the line. Clearly, things aren't as sharp as they should be yet. It was nice seeing Oping Sumalinog be productive, though. He shot 3 triples on the way to 11 points in just 15 minutes of action. Curiously enough, Ryan Buenafe didn’t play in this game.

- Despite many of its main players gone, JRU still looks to figure prominently in this season’s NCAA. Nate Matute should be the main gunner, but other guys like Nat Lopez and Mike Carampil might actually be able to help the Bombers get on the board often.

- Despite, to my knowledge at least, Chris Camus still having one year of eligibility left, he’s nowhere to be found on the UST roster. This could be a game-changer for the Tigers, since their fastbreak is predicated on guys like Camus and Karim Abdul getting those defensive rebounds. If, indeed, Camus won’t play, then guys like Paolo Pe, Melo Afuang, and Kent Lao will have to step up.
