Speeding Bullets:
- The Greenies from Greenhills rebounded from their loss to Xavier by upending the UST Tiger Cubs, thanks mainly to the scoring of Mario Bonleon. Bonleon shot 9-of-26 from the floor to finish with 22 markers for LSGH, while Lorenzo Mercado took care of the interior with 10 points and 14 rebounds. The Greenies moved up to 2-1, while UST absorbed its second loss in four games.
- The Baby Tamaraws also got back on the winning track, coming from behind to defeat the Arellano Braves. Down by 13 at the half, the Baby Tams pushed their way back into the contest in the third period and continued to heighten the pressure in the fourth frame. FEU outscored Arellano 44-24 in the second half to snatch their second win in four outings. The Braves went down to 2-3 in group play.
- The Ateneans continued to suffer from a spate of injuries and absences as they lost their second straight game, this time to the tough-as-nails Staglets. Rhanzel Yong, Michael
Calisaan, and John Macasaet exploited Ateneo’s weakness in the paint by combining for 35 points and 39 rebounds, which was the same rebound total the entire Blue Eaglets team had! Onyok Velasco (NOT a typo!!!) and Lorenzo Navarro, meanwhile, took turns burning the hoops from afar, pairing up for 26 points and 6 triples. Anton Asistio led the floundering Eaglets with 22 points, but it’s pretty clear Ateneo still has a long way to go if they want to get back into title contention. Injuries have slowed down some key players, while others are fresh from stints abroad. They have also hit a snag in the Freego FCBL tourney, where they are now toting a 2-4 card. In the Filoil league, the Eaglets are middling with a 2-2 slate, while the Staglets are still undefeated in 2 matches.- The Golden Stags finally broke through the win column after two tough losses, beating the Adamson Soaring Falcons with superior shooting, rebounding, and defense. Calvin Abueva, Ian Sangalang, and Dexter Maiquez combined for 60 of Baste’s 78-point output as they finally got a win after losing to Mapua and NU. The Falcons, meanwhile, absorbed their second loss in four games despite 7 combined treys from Roider Cabrera, Jericho Cruz, and Ryan Monteclaro. Their two biggest stars, Alex Nuyles and Eric Camson, were limited to just 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists combined.
- The Green Archers continued to impress after they beat the Fighting Maroons in convincing manner. Jovet Mendoza and Almond Vosotros each produced 13 points to pace De La Salle, which moved up to 3-1. Norbert Torres teamed up with Mendoza to dominate the lane. Torres had 11 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while Mendoza added 9 caroms of his own. Jeron Teng wound up with 9 points on 3-of-6 shooting, though he did commit 4 turnovers. Curiously enough, DLSU had 22 TOs, while UP had just 9. Still, coach Ricky Dandan’s wards failed to capitalize on the Archers’ mistakes. UP shot a paltry 27% from the field, including laying a big fat egg from beyond the arc. A bright spot, however, was newcomer Chris Ball, who finished with 10 points on 4-of-6 FG shooting to add to his 2 blocks.
