The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: May 25-30, 2012 Notes, Scores, & Images

Roi Sumang soars into the air against Paolo Romero and
the UP Fighting Maroons.

Speeding Bullets:
- The Letran Squires, SBC Red Cubs, and NU Bullpups continue to lead their respective groupd in the Juniors Division, with all three teams sporting squeaky-clean 5-0 slates. It’ll be interesting to see how these teams will fare in the next round if they face each other. By early indications, it seems the Red Cubs are the best team so far, especially considering they have a handful of national team stalwarts in Arvin Tolentino, Joshua Caracut, and Ranbill Tongco. NU, meanwhile, is bannered by the Seniors-bound Raph Atangan, who’s as versatile as they come. They’ve also got another national team member, Hubert Cani, who gives their backcourt a dynamic look. Letran, meanwhile is top-heavy, relying on the lengthy Rey Nambatac and the burly Ivan Villanueva for their inside punch. Bong Quinto has also been a strong piece for the Intramuros-based quintet.
- Other teams who could make the next round in the Juniors Division are the SSC Staglets, Mapua Red Robins, LSGH Greenies, UPIS Junior Maroons, and Xavier Golden Stallions.
With the exceptions of SSC, which has a 4-1 card, all those teams carry 3 wins against 2 losses each. Most surprising has been UPIS, which scraped the bottom of the UAAP barrel last season. They look like a legitimate Final Four contender for Season 75. Sadly, three of the four UAAP Juniors Final Four teams last year might not make the quarterfinals, with both the Zobel Junior Archers and my own Blue Eaglets each winning just 2 of 4 games so far, and the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws losing 3 of their 5 matches. A big development for FEU, however, has been the return of Jerie Pingoy, who was allegedly thinking of leaving FEU before the summer. Pingoy has been seen playing in the Freeego-FCBL despite, reportedly, still recovering from a bout with tuberculosis.
- In the Seniors Division, NU and San Beda continue their dominant play, with both squads remaining unbeaten in a combined 15 games. Both teams should enter the quarterfinals as the top seeds, and both have very good chances of advancing deep into the playoffs. The dynamic duo of Emmanuel Mbe and Ray Parkso continues to spearhead the play of coach Eric Altamirano’s pack, while big men Ola Adeogun and Jake Pascual continue to be the anchors of coach Ronnie Magsanoc’s pride.
- Three other teams already have locks on quarterfinals slots, too. Ateneo, San Sebastian, and FEU have all won 6 games, which effectively propelled them to the next round. DLSU, UST, and Letran can all still make the Final 8, but they should win their last elims games to do so. All three teams have identical 4-3 records. Benilde and Adamson still have mathematical chances of making it, but because they no longer have any games left, and they both have 4-4 slates, they’ll have to pray and just hope the quotient results favor them.
- One big thing that has really helped the NU Bulldogs so far has been the play of their supporting cast, especially Mark De Guzman and Denice Villamor. The former CSB Blazer and RTU Blue Thunder (respectively) have been relatively consistent for this season’s UAAP hosts. Both are in the statistical top 10, averaging a combined 18 points per game to complement the amazing production of Mbe and Parks. Indeed, the Bulldogs might be looking at a banner year.
