2012 PBA Governor’s Cup Finals Game 3: Painters Take 2-1 Lead

Jamelle Cornley led the Painters in taking a 2-1
series lead against the Llamados.

RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO-PAINTERS over B-MEG LLAMADOS, 93-84

Rain or Shine didn’t have Paul Lee for the whole game.

B-Meg didn’t have its stars for much of the fourth quarter.

In the end, it was the Painters who went off with the Game 3 win and the 2-1 series lead.

In a strange and unexpected twist, Coach Tim Cone of B-Meg chose to rest his big guns at a pivotal point in the second half. This definitely contributed to the Painters running away with the win, and, as expected, it didn’t sit well with the Llamados’ fans.

The B-Meg top brass, however, threw its full support behind the many-time champion coach, and they’re expected to bounce back strong in Game 4 – strange and unexpected things notwithstanding.

Game Report:

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters relied on the game-long brilliance of import Jamelle Cornley and the second-half explosion of Jeff Chan to overcome the absence of their star rookie and turn back B-MEG, 93-84, in Game Three of the Governors’ Cup finals Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Cornley bounced back from a subpar Game 2 to post 26 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists while Chan scored all 18 of his points in the second half to help Rain or Shine take a 2-1 series lead despite missing Paul Lee, who is likely out for the series after re-aggravating his shoulder injury.

“We just played as hard as we can,” said Elasto Painters coach Yeng Guiao, who added that his players have been inspired by their fallen comrade.

“Paul Lee helped us get here, and the best way to compliment that is to finish the job,” added Guiao, who is seeking to give the franchise its first title.

Curiously, B-MEG coach Tim Cone played his starters limited minutes in the second half despite the game still in the balance.

James Yap and Peter June Simon missed all of the fourth quarter and played just 22 and 24 minutes, respectively. Import Marqus Blakely and Marc Pingris did not return to the game until there was less than three minutes left in the game and Rain or Shine was leading by nine points.

Rain or Shine took advantage, leading by as many as 21 points early in the fourth quarter. The Llamados, however, led by Jonas Villanueva, who scored 18 points, tried to mount several uprisings, only to fall short with timely hits from the Elasto Painters.

Jonas Villanueva tried to rally B-Meg in the
final frame, but they fell short.

Jeff Chan flexed his muscle in the second half,
where he scored all 18 of his points.

Coach Tim Cone faced scrutiny after he sat his stars
for a big part of the second half.
