Growing Their Wings: Eaglets Drop Opener to Baby Tamaraws

The 2012 edition of the Blue Eaglets is off to a rough
start after losing to FEU on opening day.

FEU-FERN BABY TAMARAWS over AHS BLUE EAGLETS, 69-58

How’s this for an understatement – the Blue Eaglets were thoroughly schooled by last season’s runner-ups, the Baby Tamaraws.

That’s a gross understatement, especially considering that the Eaglets were down by as many as 26 points late in the third quarter.

It was just an unmitigated disaster. Sure, there were tokens of resistance here and there, but, by and large, FEU was the much better team out there.

The numbers alone speak volumes:
-       FEU had 21 more field goal attempts than our boys did, simply because they were a whopping +16 on the offensive glass. All in all, the Baby Tamaraws of coach Michael Oliver grabbed 52 rebounds to just 39 for the Ateneans.
-       The Green & Gold juniors also forced a lot more blue turnovers – 18 to be exact – and converted these into 19 TO points. As for the Eaglets? They scored just 5 off FEU’s errors.
-       Another disturbing number? Nobody broke the 5-point barrier for the Eaglets until sophomore Matthew Nieto hit his two free throws at the end of the third period. Anton Asistio did finish with 14 markers, but most of those were scored in the latter part of the final frame, when the outcome was all but beyond doubt.

It’s not exactly a shocker that our Eaglets struggled against FEU. That team is tough. Their star, Jerie Pingoy, can start for any SENIORS team out there right now if he wanted to, and he’s no taller than 5’6”!!! Along with him, many of their players are veterans from last season – Josh Aguilon, the Domingo boys, and Korean playmaker Woo You. We won against them once last year, but they also beat us badly in another encounter. It’ll be pretty interesting to see what adjustments our boys will make when they collide again in round 2.

Veterans, the seniors, like Asistio, Gabe Capacio, Mark Gamboa and Mio Puno will really have to provide leadership, while up-and-comers like Thirdy Ravena, Aaron Black, the Nieto twins, and freshie Jolo Mendoza will have to grow up fast. For now, it’s pretty clear this not exactly the start we wanted, but it’s the start we’ve been given, and our Eaglets will definitely learn from it.
