AHS Blue Eaglets over AdU Baby Falcons, 75-54
Coach Joe Silva’s Blue Eaglets rebounded from a tough loss to the NU Bullpups this past Wednesday by venting out all their frustrations on the luckless Baby Falcons of Coach Jing Ruiz.
The Ateneans opened their account well, unloading an 11-3 run in the first quarter that set the tempo for the rest of the game. Aaron Black scored 5 of his 13 points in that span, helping the Eaglets take the initiative early and end the quarter up, 13-7.
The Eaglets continued to pour the heat in the second stanza via a big 14-4 spurt that broke the game open. Wunderkind Jolo Mendoza scored 6 of his 11 points in that run, which put the Katipunan quintet comfortably ahead, 27-11. Adamson would mount a mini-rally to trim the deficit to just 10 at the half, but it was clear Ateneo had the momentum.
Senior Anton Asistio and sophomore Matthew Nieto then conspired to open the second half with a 7-0 Ateneo blast. This erected for the Eaglets a huge 16-point advantage from which Adamson would never fully recover. The Blue & White continued to pile it on and entered the final frame leading, 50-33.
The Baby Falcons played their best in the fourth period, but the lead was just too big to overhaul. Big men Bolek Vitangcol, Patrick Vinasoy, Gabe Capacio, and Jme Escaler held their own underneath to buck the absence of injured frontliner Mike Nieto. Escaler, in particular, did really well. The junior grabbed 13 rebounds in just 15 minutes of play.
By far the best player of the game, however, was Thirdy Ravena, who stuffed the box scores silly with 17 markers and 19 boards. It’s pretty clear he’s out to carve his own niche in Ateneo hoops lore.
This win levels the Eaglets’ record at 2-2. They have yet to go up against the DLSZ Junior Archers, UST Tiger Cubs, and UE Pages, all of whom are dangerous teams Ateneo will have to beat if they want a strong chance of making the Final Four.
