AdMU BLUE EAGLES over FEU TAMARAWS, 77-64
Exhibit A in the “How great will JP Erram be next season?” bin – the former Pilgrim Christian College standout put up 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 block in THIRTEEN minutes of action. The guy for whom he subs, Greg Slaughter, played more than double that amount of time and produced marginally better numbers that were offset by 7 turnovers. He’s no Nonoy Baclao, but he might actually turn out to be a bit better. Erram is going to rule the roost next season.
Erram, however, wasn’t the big story here, though his suspension for the Ateneo-La Salle became a big post-game issue.
A bigger story was how Ateneo actually won after trailing at the half. There are two main reasons. The first one shouldn’t come as a surprise, since it’s been a hallmark of Norman Black’s tenure in Katipunan – defense. Terrence Romeo, who was norming huge second round numbers (23 points per game and shooting 60% from beyond the arc) prior to this encounter, scored 13 points on just 5-of-14 shooting from the floor. Coach Bert Flores’s chief big man, Anthony Hargrove, meanwhile, was limited to just 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field. He made life tough for Ateneo’s bigs in the first twenty minutes, but he went on to score just 3 markers in the second half. Roger Pogoy and Mark Belo, two unheralded but equally important cogs in FEU’s machinery, were also hampered, combining for just 2 points total.
The second big reason Ateneo won is a little more, shall we say, thought-provoking. The Eagles actually outshot the Tamaraws from long range. This means the Blues hit more threes than FEU and actually had a better clip from long distance. Considering how the Katipunan quintet was dead last in perimeter points, dead last in total threes made, and second-to-the-last in three-point percentage before this match, actually outshooting the Moraytans was an AWESOME result. The main instigator, of course, was Juami Tiongson, who seems to have rediscovered his sniping with 4 triples, while Kiefer Ravena hit 2 long toms, and Von Pessumal connected on the last of his six rainbow attempts.
But, wait, before we send this blog post to the realm of UAAP history, remember that Ateneo’s unexpectedly hot shooting from long range STILL wasn’t the biggest story here.
The biggest story, folks, was the refined character shown by one Arvie Bringas. Boy, that must be the most refined spitball (more like spit-spray) I’ve ever seen in high definition. Wow.
Elbow someone. Kick someone. Butt heads. Get into a shoving match. Close-fist slap an opponent. We thought we’d seen it all.
Until Bringas reminded us of the creativity (or depravity?) that the human race is capable of.
Awesome. Just awesome.
And how do we revere Bringas’s sheer awesomeness? We suspend him. The FEU team itself reprimands him. And, yes, he becomes the latest “victim” of “cyber-bullying” this side of Christopher Lao, Blair Carabuena and Tito Sotto.
In a game where Ateneo’s future main big man put up terribly efficient stats, in a game where the Eagles’ shooting was on-target, in a game where RR Garcia desperately fought on despite the lost cause in the final five minutes, in a game where both Belo and Ryan Buenafe were thrown out, the biggest story was one man’s spray of spit. All caught in high definition.
