WEEK 7 POWER RANKINGS:
Let the disagreements begin!
1- Ateneo Blue Eagles: One word aptly describes Ateneo right now – balance. The Eagles are the best in scoring and the best in defense so far. They do a lot of things well. The Blues are tops in fast break points and inside points. When they’re hacked, they make their foes pay by being the only team shooting above the 70% mark from the free throw line. They’re on a roll right now, and it’s no stretch of the imagination for them to continue on their merry way.
2- FEU Tamaraws: The moment the buzzer sounded to end the Tamaraws’ humiliation of UST, I knew they had be AT LEAST number 2. In one game alone, they have successfully proven their critics (myself included) wrong on several fronts. And it wasn’t just because UST was shooting blanks in that game. It was also because FEU just couldn’t miss – not even if they tried! Yes, they were almost sideswiped by the Falcons, but the late surge sparked by RR Garcia, Anthony Hargrove, and Arvie Bringas was enough to ensure their escape. I still think Romeo shoots too much, but when he’s averaging 23.0ppg and shooting 60% from three, then it’s really tough to complain.
3- UST Growling Tigers: Let’s see. UST went 1-1 this past week. They were blasted to kingdom come by FEU, and they had to recover after a 14-point first half to catch up with NU and beat them in OT. Obviously, this isn’t the start to the second round that Coach Pido wanted, but it’s the one he has been handed, so where to from here? There are just a bunch of questions. Was Jeric Teng’s return a little too soon? Have people figured out Karim Abdul? Has Coach Pido’s luck, or “tsamba” (roughly stated), finally run out? The España faithful had to know they couldn’t keep on escaping the axe the rest of the way, right? The forecast looks cloudy for UST.
4- DLSU Green Archers: In stark contrast to UST, it seems like the Archers might be on the up and up. After beating NU to end round one, the Greenies got the job done against UE. They’re slowly building some momentum, and it’s not a long shot for them to challenge for a twice-to-beat edge in the near future. Arnold Van Opstal looked mighty promising against UE, and if he continues his reasonably good production, then watch out world. Here come the Green Archers.
5- NU Bulldogs: So the Bulldogs barely beat Adamson, and they lost a sizable double-digit lead in the loss to UST. Just not a good week for Coach Eric Altamirano. Right now, this NU team seems light years removed from the one that reigned supreme in the summer months. The key for NU has been consistency, or, more appropriately, the lack thereof. They blow hot and cold, and most of their “cold” games have been against the really deep teams. That’s really unfortunate because this is a team built for a title run – a team with the pieces in place. The current problem seems to be that the whole just isn’t as good as the sum of its parts.
6- UP Fighting Maroons: UP continued its “not quite there yet” approach to winning games. That is to say, they always come close, but they just don’t quite get there. The Maroons have a lot of things going for them. Consider these: they are great in terms of taking care of the basketball (they turn it over 13.3 times per game, second to FEU), they are tops in points-off-turnovers, and they have the best-scoring bench of the whole lot. So why are they mired in 6th place with just 1 win to show after 8 games? Three reasons, really – they cannot score (second-worst FG% at 35%), they cannot rebound (league-worst 40.3 per game), and they foul too much for their own good (a league-leading 22.4 fouls per game).
7- Adamson Soaring Falcons: Here’s what I love about Adamson – they’re just effin’ stubborn. They don’t know when to quit. They don’t care that they lost their best player for the rest of the season. They don’t care that Jericho Cruz is chucking the rock almost as many times as Terrence Romeo, only Cruz isn’t making as many of them as Romeo. They don’t care that Rodney Brondial’s game has dipped this past week. Everyone hears the universe tell Adamson to just lie down and roll over, but the Falcons just don’t. I like how every Adamson game is going to be a dogfight, but I’m sad at knowing every Adamson game will probably end up in the loss column anyway.
8- UE Red Warriors: UE has an up-and-coming PG in Roi Sumang. They have an up-and-coming big man in Chris Javier. They have up-and-coming swingmen in Gene Belleza and Pedrito Galanza. It’s all about the up-and-coming stuff, and never about the “now” stuff. Will Boysie Zamar be able to change that in their last 6 games? I doubt, but his experience on the bench might be the missing piece to an upset or two in the horizon.
