DLSU GREEN ARCHERS over UP FIGHITNG MAROONS, 76-69
The UP Fighting Maroons were probably inspired by what transpired in the first game. They probably felt that, like UE, they could upset one of the top teams and make it a terrific Thursday for the underdogs.
They were well on their way to do it, too, and if not for Almond Vosotros’s second half explosion, the Maroons might have actually handed the Archers their fifth loss of the season.
Coach Ricky Dandan’s wards, true to form, took the fight to their Taft rivals. Buoyed by the resurgent play of Jett Manuel and the solid quarterbacking of Mark Lopez, the Diliman quintet stuck close to La Salle in the first half. Despite Jeron Teng and Norbert Torres combining for 27 of DLSU’s first half total of 41, UP still hung on, trailing by just 7 points when the pep squads took the floor.
As the third quarter began, the Maroons turned up the heat, unloading a 14-4 spurt that enabled them to enjoy a 3-point lead with about 4 minutes to go in the period. Coach Gee Abanilla then sued for time and made a critical decision.
At that point in time, Vosotros wasn’t having a very good day. He was 0-for-3 from the field and only had 1 point thanks to a split at the line. He played just 6 minutes so far.
When Coach Abanilla called his number, however, a fire was lit in the former Staglet. He quickly rattled in 6 straight points and teamed up with Jovet Mendoza to restore the Archers’ lead, 54-50, at the end of the third canto.
Now he was getting his groove, and UP was in trouble.
Vosotros was never subbed out again as he continued his barrage in the final 10 minutes. He hit three triples on his way to scoring all but 8 of DLSU’s 22 points in the game’s last stanza. This included a dagger three from the right wing that beat the shot clock inside the final two minutes.
His performance sealed the win for the Greenies, and that propelled them to solo fourth at 7-4.
It was another deflating defeat for UP. Once again, they did enough to keep close, but, once again, they couldn’t make the big plays to get over the hump. Another honest to goodness great effort by UP resulted in another subpar finish. Sayang.
Meanwhile, on Taft Avenue, the number of people lamenting the absence of LA Revilla has decreased. That’s because Jeron Teng has remained a juggernaut, and Norbert Torres has been a solid inside force. The main reason, however, lies with the great play of Almond Vosotros, who has really stepped up for the Green & White. He has stepped up when the moment has called for it. He has stepped up big time – stepped up, like a BOSS.
