WEEK 10 POWER RANKINGS:
Let the disagreements begin!
1- Ateneo Blue Eagles: This was, all in all, a great bounce-back week for Ateneo. The Eagles dominated the Bulldogs again before avenging their only first round loss versus UST (yes, UST, that WAS a goaltend). The Blue & White are the only ones assured of a Final Four seat and a twice-to-beat edge, so they’re sitting pretty in the waiting room. Don’t count on them to rest on their laurels, however, since they have their minds set on clinching an unprecedented 5-peat in the Final Four era.
2- UST Growling Tigers: Despite the loss to the Eagles, it’s crystal clear that UST is Ateneo’s contrapelo in Season 75. Karim Abdul’s ability to hit the mid-range J and drive strong to the hole is the perfect foil to Greg Slaughter’s imposing presence. Aljon Mariano, even if he had a less-than-stellar outing this past weekend, is still a big match-up headache for Coach Norman Black. They should win over UE and, therefore, cement their slot in the Final Four.
3- DLSU Green Archers: La Salle is riding high after beating FEU, and they seem pretty confident they can blast the Falcons to stay alive for the Final Four. Almond Vosotros continues to impress despite the return of LA Revilla, and that should balance out the inconsistent production of Jeron Teng and Norbert Torres. The Archers are definitely the underdogs, but a win over Adamson might give them the momentum needed to spoil the favorites’ title aspirations.
4- FEU Tamaraws: FEU slides down significantly because of their big downer against La Salle and because the Bulldogs know they’re more than capable of beating the Tamaraws on Sunday. Once again, Coach Bert Flores’s boys also almost lost to UP, which is definitely not a good sign. FEU should actually thank its lucky stars the Maroons didn’t file a formal protest to the Commissioner in their first round loss. Now THAT was a goaltend as clear as day. And who the hell was that guy who threw the ball at Jed Manguera? These Tamaraws just aren’t making things easy for themselves.
5- NU Bulldogs: The Bulldogs are quite confident they can beat FEU, and their win over UP boosts their drive even more. Both Mbe and Parks need to be at their best on Sunday if Coach Eric Altamirano wants to fulfill his Final Four wishes (and, according to some rumors, keep his post). Can NU wield some of the magic that helped them nail the 2012 Filoil plum?
6- Adamson Soaring Falcons: Jericho Cruz and Rodney Brondial continued to play well in Week 10, and they’re probably looking forward to dashing DLSU’s Final Four hopes in Week 11. This is a dangerous Adamson squad that the Archers can ill afford to take lightly as the Falcons are explosive enough to throw a wrench in all of Coach Gee Abanilla’s Final Four machinations.
7- UE Red Warriors: The were blown out for only the second time in the second round by a team they were good enough to beat. Such an irony! Still, UST would do well to NOT count these guys out. That Chris Javier-Adrian Santos combo is as good as any frontline out there, and a Roi Sumang/Gene Belleza explosion can really cause a lot of havoc (right, Ateneo?).
8- UP Fighting Maroons: Seeing the graduating Maroons shed their tears after losing to NU was a bewildering sight. Were they sad because they were leaving, or because they actually thought they could win? Well, in all honesty, they’re good enough to beat any team in this league. They just didn’t (save for that solitary W against UE). At least now the graduating Iskos can move on with their lives into better things, and, hopefully, UP’s program can move in the right direction as well.
