WEEK 8 POWER RANKINGS:
Let the disagreements begin!
1- Ateneo Blue Eagles: They rallied to beat FEU, and they held off a spirited DLSU. In the end, they went 2-0 and tightened their grip at the top spot. It also seems like all the cogs are clicking, with Ryan Buenafe and JP Erram having breakout performances. Their last four games won’t be cakewalks by any stretch of the imagination (UE, Adamson, NU, UST), but as long as they play true to form, then the Eagles should end the elims number one.
2- FEU Tamaraws: They rebounded from a stinging loss to Ateneo by escaping the Bulldogs in what, so far, is the most controversial game of the season. They’re my number two team right now, but some whispers have led me to believe their frontline might take a permanent hit soon (something to do with someone bringing his bravado all the way to an opposing team’s bus). Rumors notwithstanding, however, the Tams should continue to be tough for any team. They should up their slate against UE in week 9.
3- DLSU Green Archers: Jeron Teng lifted them over UST, but the Archers folded against Ateneo’s firepower. They should return to the win column against UP tomorrow before a critical clash against NU on Sunday in a match that will probably determine who completes the Final Four cast. Teng continues to score in bunches, but his percentages aren’t worth marveling at. This is tempered, though, by the currently hot shooting of Almond Vosotros.
4- UST Growling Tigers: Jeric Teng was outplayed by his bro a week ago, but he bounced back with aplomb against Adamson this past weekend. He needs to continue playing at a high level if UST is to have a chance at the coveted twice-to-beat edge. Coach Pido’s wards should make short work of the Maroons on Saturday, but, then again, stranger things have happened.
5- NU Bulldogs: NU needed a career game from Henri Betayene to upend UE before their controversial loss to FEU this past Sunday. The Bulldogs are now backed into a corner. Their best possible record is 9-5, and that’s IF they beat both La Salle and Ateneo in succession before ending the season against UP. Needless to say, the Bulldogs don’t have the inside track.
6- Adamson Soaring Falcons: The Falcons have been the most overachieving team so far. That’s a label that should’ve belonged to UP, but Adamson is doing surprisingly well sans Alex Nuyles. If Jericho Cruz continues to spew fire, then they might be in a good spot to play spoiler against many a Final Four team.
7- UE Red Warriors: No buzzer-beaters will probably save the Reds from Ateneo and FEU this week, but Javier’s game-winner surely boosts their confidence in the Boysie Zamar era. The future doesn’t look bleak, even if they end up 2-12. That record still indicates the Recto quintet has met expectations, which is something we cannot say about the last team on this list.
8- UP Fighting Maroons: The Iskos had their best chance at a winning streak in Week 8, but, instead, they ended up with the worst record in the league. La Salle and UST are up this week followed by FEU and NU to end the whole campaign. Yikes. Perhaps it’s time for Coach Ricky Dandan to pull out his “let’s just gain as much experience as we can” speech.
