5. Damian Lillard (POR) - 17.6ppg, 3.6rpg,
6.2apg, .500 3pt%, .867 FT%, 15.0 EFF
Lillard
really is more of a scoring PG than a playmaking one. Think guys like Rod
Strickland, Stephon Marbury, or, more recently, Russell Westbrook. I wouldn’t
be surprised if he runs away with the ROY, but I just don’t think it’s as solid
of a lock as many people think. Gotta love his range, though.
4. Maurice Harkless (ORL) - 14.2ppg,
7.2rpg, 2.4spg, 1.0bpg, 15.4 EFF
The former
St. John’s standout has good size and good skills for a combo forward. Orlando
has won just 2 games this month, but the Magic’s failure cannot be pointed to
Harkless’s game. I mean, this dude dropped 25 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, and
4 blocks on KD and the Thunder a week ago.
3. Kyle O'Quinn (ORL) - 12.0ppg, 9.0rpg,
.614 FG%, 18.2 EFF
The second
Magic rookie on this list is a 6’10” banger who registered two double-doubles
in Orlando’s last four games. He was also just a rebound shy of a third against
OKC last March 23 (Manila time). He’s not big on defense, but his offense is
pretty polished. SIXTY ONE PERCENT from the field? Are you kidding?!
2. Jonas Valanciunas (TOR) - 15.2ppg,
7.6rpg, .750 FG%, .889 FT%, 19.4 EFF
The 7-footer
from Lithuania is hogging all the minutes reserved for beleaguered Italian
Andrea Bargnani. Valanciunas has just been a picture of efficiency. He is not a
double-double machine (yet), but he certainly won’t miss more than a couple of
shots (literally) and he certainly knows how to use his size for those
rebounds. Now if he can only use his frame for some defense…
1. Anthony Davis (NOH) - 15.2ppg, 9.0rpg,
1.2bpg, .611 FG%, 20.8 EFF
This is the
reason why I think the ROY race should still be wide open. Davis hasn’t missed
a beat since returning from his injury early in the season. He’s had five
double-doubles this month, including an 18-point and 15-rebound beauty against
Marc Gasol and the Grizzlies last week. Lillard for ROY? Not so fast.
