The NBA: Who is your 2012-2013 Rookie of the Year?

The New Orleans Hornets have 17 games left in the calendar. The Portland Trailblazers have 20 more regular season games and still have a reasonable shot at the Playoffs (yes, they still do, don’t be mean guys). Why should you care? Because the Rookie of the Year of the current season will come from either of those teams, unless Bradley Beal goes Rambo on everyone and makes like 10 treys per game. Of course, that won’t happen. One – Rambo can’t shoot threes, two – Beal doesn’t have explosive-tipped arrows, and three – nobody speaks like Rambo.

Seriously, though, who will be this year’s ROY? The top overall pick who has been just… okay, or the 6th overall pick who’s gotten majority of the press? Or someone else? Or, actually, Beal himself?

Note: All of the following stats are from HoopsStats.com. They were taken on March 12, 2013.

Presenting the TOP FIVE Candidates for ROY, statistically speaking.

5. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (CHA) - 9.0ppg, 5.6rpg, 1.0bpg, 11.7 EFF
MKG had a reasonably good start to the year, but he hasn’t really broken out the way many people thought he could. IF the Bobcats get rid of both/either Ben Gordon and/or Kemba Walker, then MKG could be a bunker buster of a scorer. Also, the 1 block per game? N I C E.

4. Bradley Beal (WAS) - 14.2ppg, 3.7rpg, 2.5apg, 12.4 EFF
He’s the third-best scorer among all rookies behind Damian Lillard and (drum roll) Dion Waiters (still wondering why the Cavs took him so early?), but, as you can see, he doesn’t really do much else. There’s great upside between him and John Wall, but there’s also the a great possibility they will just be… mediocre.

When healthy and on-target, Bradley Beal is an
amazing scorer.

3. Andre Drummond (DET) - 7.3ppg, 7.5rpg, 1.7bpg, .592 FG%, 13.4 EFF
Drummond is second among all rookies in both rebounds and blocks, and owns the highest FG% among all newbies who play at least 10 minutes per game. All indications point to him becoming a potentially dominant defensive force for Detroit maybe as early as next season. That’s a good thing, especially since Greg Monroe loves to just score, and Brandon Knight, um, just got run over by DeAndre Jordan.

2. Anthony Davis (NOH) - 12.9ppg, 7.8rpg, 1.1spg, 1.8bpg, .507 FG%, 17.1 EFF
I love the fact Davis doesn’t receive much hype (currently), but he still does the dirty work. His per minute EFF is actually quite higher than the #1 guy on this list, but I doubt if he can sneak in more ROY votes. The simple reason is he just has been off-the-radar for so long. As far as top picks go, he isn’t terrible by any means, but he has just not been dominant. He’s certainly no Kwame Brown, but he also hasn’t been quite like Dwight Howard.

1. Damian Lillard (POR) - 18.9ppg, 3.2rpg, 6.4apg, 1.0spg, 17.3 EFF
He tops all rookies in scoring and assists. His team was in the West’s top eight for a considerable amount of time, and, frankly, he might be All-Star material next season (a handful might argue that he already is). Lillard has the inside track to be this season’s ROY. Tapos.

Is Damiam Lillard your ROY?

It is worth noting that both Waiters and Thomas Robinson were chosen ahead of Lillard and yet both aren’t on this list. Waiters is actually right behind MKG in terms of EFF, but Robinson is way off… like Top 19 way off.

Final Score: Brooklyn 93, Atlanta 80
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Deron Williams followed up his amazing effort from Friday night with a 17-point night Saturday, as the Brooklyn Nets snapped an eight-game road losing streak to the Atlanta Hawks with a 93-80 victory at Philips Arena. Williams' performance came one night after he buried an NBA- record nine 3-pointers in the first half and finishing 11-of-16 from beyond the arc overall, on the way to 42 points in a 95-78 home win over Washington. Brook Lopez ended with 18 points and nine rebounds, and Andray Blatche also scored 18 for the Nets, who won their third in a row. Al Horford had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Hawks, who lost for the fifth time in six games. Josh Smith finished with 12 points, two ahead of teammates Johan Petro and John Jenkins.

Final Score: New York 113, Utah 84
New York, NY (Sports Network) - J.R. Smith had 24 points on an efficient 10- for-18 shooting and without their two star players, the New York Knicks used a balanced attack to rout the Utah Jazz, 113-84, on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Just prior to the contest, the Knicks announced Carmelo Anthony would miss a third straight game with a knee injury and had even more disconcerting news regarding forward Amar'e Stoudemire. After complaining of sore knees earlier on Saturday, an MRI confirmed that Stoudemire will be forced to undergo another knee debridement procedure, this time on his right knee. He had the same operation on his left knee back in October and is expected to miss about six weeks. The rest of the Knicks, however, came out resilient despite the dejecting news as Steve Novak buried five 3-pointers to score 20 points. Raymond Felton added 15 and Iman Shumpert and Kenyon Martin each scored 10 for New York, which shot 50.7 percent for the game. The Jazz fell for the fourth straight contest and were without Paul Millsap, who was ruled out just prior to the contest with knee inflammation. Alec Burks scored a team-high 14 points and Gordon Hayward followed with 13.

Jeff Green finally made his initial appearance in Oklahoma City since the Thunder shipped him to Boston in the Kendrick Perkins trade on Feb. 24, 2011. Bryant tallied 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in the Lakers' 90-81 win over the Chicago Bulls. The Lakers began the campaign 17-25, but have rebounded by going 16-6 since to leap frog the Utah Jazz by a half-game for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Final Score: Miami 105, Indiana 90

Final Score: New Orleans 98, Portland 96
New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Ryan Anderson's go-ahead 3-point play with 1.8 seconds left proved to be the difference as the New Orleans Hornets held on for a 98-96 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. Anderson put in the go-ahead bucket as he fought through a Jared Jeffries foul underneath the hoop. He finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds to help the Hornets snap a three-game losing streak. Greivis Vasquez chipped in 20 points and rookie Anthony Davis continued his strong play as of late for New Orleans, totaling 18 points with 10 rebounds. Damian Lillard had the Trail Blazers ahead by one with 11.2 seconds left after answering an Anderson triple with one of his own. He ended with 20 points and eight assists for Portland, which had come in as winners in four of its last six. Wesley Matthews scored a game-high 24 points, but misfired on the potential game-winning basket as time expired. J.J. Hickson contributed 14 points and 14 boards in the setback.

Final Score: Milwaukee 115, Sacramento 113
Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - Monta Ellis had 29 points with nine assists and the Milwaukee Bucks survived, 115-113, at Sleep Train Arena despite a furious comeback from the Sacramento Kings. The Kings cut a 15-point fourth- quarter deficit to one with 6.6 seconds left, but Ellis calmly sank a pair from the line to increase Milwaukee's edge to three. The Bucks then fouled Sacramento's Jimmer Fredette to prevent him from tying the game with a 3- pointer, but after splitting a pair from the line, he got the rebound and kicked it out to Tyreke Evans, whose desperation heave at the buzzer just missed the mark.

Final Score: Golden State 92, New York 63
Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Stephen Curry didn't light up the Knicks for 54 points on Monday, but his Warriors rolled to a blowout win nonetheless. Curry netted 26 points to lead Golden State in a 92-63 drubbing of New York, avenging the team's loss at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 27 despite the point guard's career high scoring night. Klay Thompson added 23 points, while David Lee recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds after missing Saturday's loss to the Bucks with a right knee contusion. Lee was also two assists shy of a triple-double against his former team after missing the previous meeting. Carmelo Anthony also returned from his own knee injury that cost him three games but was not as successful, hitting just 4- of-15 shots to finish with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. The Knicks had won three of four coming in, but shot an NBA season-low 27 percent from the field to open a five-game road trip on a sour note.

March 12
Final Score: Charlotte 100, Boston 74
Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Gerald Henderson scored a career-high 35 points and made all 12 of his free throw attempts as the Charlotte Bobcats ended a 10-game skid by downing the Boston Celtics, 100-74, on Tuesday. Final Score: LA Lakers 106, Orlando 97
Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - The frenetic Orlando crowd jeered every time Dwight Howard stepped up to the foul line and cheered every time he missed. Howard returned to the Magic Kingdom for the first time since his trade to the Lakers during the offseason and had a season-high 39 points, 16 rebounds and matched his own NBA record with 39 free-throw attempts in Los Angeles' 106-97 win. The Magic hacked Howard intentionally throughout and continually sent the woeful foul shooter to the charity stripe. Howard went 25-of-39 from the foul line, but sunk 23 of his final 30 after beginning the game just 2-of-9. He broke Wilt Chamberlain's 50-year-old, single- game mark of 34 free throws, done Feb. 22, 1962, on Jan. 13, 2012 against the Warriors. Howard sunk 21-of-39 from the line against Golden State. Howard led the Magic to the 2009 NBA Finals, was a six-time All-Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year during his eight-year stay in Orlando. He averaged 18.4 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.16 blocks with the Magic, who selected him with the first overall pick of the 2004 draft.

Brooklyn, NY (Sports Network) - Brook Lopez had 26 points and Deron Williams scored 20 to go along with 13 assists as the Brooklyn Nets edged the New Orleans Hornets, 108-98, on Tuesday at Barclays Center. Andray Blatche chipped in 18 points, while MarShon Brooks donated 14 for the Nets, who bounced back from a defeat at Philadelphia on Monday and have won four of five. Eric Gordon scored 21 points and Anthony Davis had a double-double with 17 and 10 boards for the Hornets, who have lost four of five overall and four consecutive road contests.

Final Score: Miami 98, Atlanta 81
Miami, FL (Sports Network) - The way the Miami Heat are going, they may have home-court advantage locked up in the Eastern Conference by the end of the month. Dwyane Wade had 23 points, six assists and five steals in Miami's 98-81 win over the Atlanta Hawks. LeBron James was just 3-of-11 from the floor, but added 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Heat, who matched the fifth longest winning streak in NBA history. With a win Wednesday against the 76ers in Philadelphia, Miami will become just the fourth squad to win 20 in a row. Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Ricky Rubio tallied his first career triple-double with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists in the Minnesota Timberwolves' 107-83 rout over the San Antonio Spurs. J.J. Barea netted 17 points off the bench for Minnesota, which had dropped eight of its last nine games coming in. San Antonio played Tuesday without forwards Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard and guard Tony Parker because of injuries. None made the trip to Minneapolis. Duncan and Leonard are each battling a sore left knee, while Parker has a sprained left ankle that's expected to keep him out a few more weeks. The Spurs listed all three with injuries, something the team did not do when Duncan, Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green were held out of a nationally televised game against Miami back in late November. NBA commissioner David Stern slapped the San Antonio organization with a fine of $250,000 for the November decision. Cory Joseph tallied 15 points to lead the Spurs, who lost for the second time in their last six.

Final Score: Memphis 102, Portland 97
